Bipolar Disorder, Type IIIClorgyline
Clorgyline is an MAOI that was singularly the most potent antidepressant drug I ever tried. It is no longer manufactured for human consumption. They do give it to mice and rats, though. It is currently used as a biological probe. It is selective for MAO-A.
Of available drugs, a combination of Parnate + desipramine seems to work best for me, especially when combined with Lamictal and Abilify. I wish there were a single drug that would make a dent.

Well since anxiety leads to depression for me it's a pre ad and that would be valium or xanax. Paxil for a short while at l0mg. And then luvox for two weeks. Phillipa

First and best was about a year on prozac 20 mg for major depression. I was single at the time so the libido-lowering effect was a bonus.

Hi,
Well that must be Remeron ('cept 4 the weight gain)...-> felt wonderfully sociable, felt we were all positively connected and my libido got a great boost too. Good 4 sleep 2.
Or Elavil (Amitriptyline) is also an excellent mood brightener, good against anxiety too, great for sleep, no negative effects sexually.

Major depression, recurring episodes
Welloft--Zoloft + Wellbutrin was absolutely the thing I needed when I needed it most.
Lexapro+Zoloft isn't doing a bad job, either, but it's not the manna from heaven Welloft was. But circumstances are different, too.

Prozac 40mg....increased a positive feeling of life. In this cirmumstance.
Wellbutrin was good for motivation, but, the limbic system reacted bad to it, almost felt having siezures. 300mg XL. I took this senior year in high school....it increased social anxiety.

NEFAZODONE! Best sex drive I ever had on an AD, and a relief from GAD to boot! It was like being on a mild E all the time. Its a damn shame they killed it.

Nardil -- 75 mg/day of the Australian version brought my severe anergic depressive symptoms into full remission for a month. I responded partially to 60 mg/day of the U.S. version of Nardil for two months before I receive what I suspect was a bad batch.
My diagnosis at the time was major depressive disorder, recurrent.

EFFEXOR 300MG
2nd place: Parnate
What didn't work: Wellbutrin, Cymbalta, Lamictal, Desipramine, Nardil (could have worked but side effects were killer)

10mg Lexapro worked great for depression symptoms when I was diagnosed with major depression disorder + GAD. Made anxiety/hypomania worse, now take 200mg Lamictal and 5mg Lexapro, have had very very little depression symptoms for over a year now! herpills

St Johns Wort. It was awesome.
Long story why that has changed, but since the question was what the best AD was, SJW wins big time over the ssris and snris.

Desipramine, 300 mg (which is a quite high dose, it's pills come in increments starting as low as 10 mg, I think). I take a beta blocker, Bystolic/nebivolol, at 2.5mg a day to counteract the heart palpitations, tachycardia, and anxiety caused by the desipramine. But don't let that scare you off! Desipramine rocks.
(I'm also on several other meds, some psychiatric and some for non-psych conditions, such as type 2 diabetes.)
My psychiatrist lists my conditions from most prominent to least as OCD, major depressive disorder, and ADD -- inattentive type. The desipramine just helps the depression for me, not the OCD nor ADD.

It's a drug. I wouldn't look at it any other way.
You can safely use whatever you can tolerate. There are no known toxic reactions from it, although individuals may find it intolerable in their own situation.
I had no anxiety from it, but sam K apparently did. I think it's important to recognize how many different drugs have been given the honour of best antidepressant ever. We're all different.
