The use of low-dose naltrexone (LDN) for the treatment and prophylaxis of various bodily disorders is discussed. Accumulating evidence suggests that LDN can promote health supporting immune-modulation which may reduce various oncogenic and inflammatory autoimmune processes. Since LDN can upregulate endogenous opioid activity, it may also have a role in promoting stress resilience, exercise, social bonding, and emotional well-being, as well as amelioration of psychiatric problems such a autism and depression. It is proposed that LDN can be used effectively as a buffer for a large variety of bodily and mental ailments through its ability to beneficially modulate both the immune system and the brain neurochemistries that regulate positive affect.

Phillipa, LDN is frequent prescribed for the autoimmune disorders, as I understand it. RXs for depression is a newer development. I wouldn't expect your typical treatment-resistant depression to respond favorably; however, if the depression is secondary to pain, chronic inflammation and/or some autoimmune/neurological disorder (e.g., hashimotos, HIV, MS, CFS, FMS, etc.), the chances are likely higher. That said, if someone's mental illness responds favorably to longer-term opioid therapy, it's certainly possible that LDN may generate feelings of well-being. It also can also potentiate opioids, such that tolerance does not build (as fast). There is a pharma company that markets or is bringing to market a LDN/opioid combo med.

Really a new med that targets opiod as I respond very favorably to opiods. They make me relaxed and feel good like no other med. Help for hasimotos? Love Phillips

I didn't know this, but have always strongly suspected a link, at least in a subset of people with depression / bipolar which is why I posted this http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/alter/20081006/msgs/877763.html. There are a lot of intelligent people here are usually to the forefront of trying to get well, so I figured if there was anywhere likely to have tried ldn for depression or similar psych complaints it would be here. I had thought ldn would be alternative..ie not mainstream pdrugs, but there are now so many boards here :-), I get lost.
I was pleased to see you had and some others.
I'd love to hear how anyone who has tried ldn is going or went on it..whether it worked for them or not, if they are still on it , and any side effects- your story, in other words.
Please post here or on the alter thread.
Thanks,
Jan
