Nardil and Provigil

Posted by metamorphosis on February 2, 2009, at 0:52:39

I might be starting Nardil when I see my doc.I'm concerned of the sedating effects it's known to have.I might add Provigil to offset the sedation.I'm looking for feedback from those who have used this combination. Is it effective to combat this side effect? Is there any other medication that people have used w/Nardil for a more activating effect?Provigil is extremley expensive but if it is effective I will try to get RX discount.

I've noticed recently that my addition of trazodone low dose (25 - 50mg; very cheap by the way...one month of 50mg is 17 bucks in canada) is producing serious hyperness with nardil (hell ya it fights nardil sedation). I'm not sure if its the traz on its own or its interaction with nardil or if it is potentiating/increasing nardils efficacy but wow. A 25mg dose at night for sleep puts me to sleep well and the next day no added effect, that I can percieve physically anyway. Then 50mg dose at night for sleep doesnt work as well for sleep but wow the increase in energy (lasting the ENTIRE day) to the point of man I wanna dance hyperness lol. I'm after a subtle increase in energy and a good sleep the night before ideally. So I will cut up the traz pill to 2/3 or 3/4 to try to find that "optimal" dose for sleep and the next days energy. Trazodone is a very sedating AD, an old one, that isnt very effective as an AD but is used commonly as a sleep aid. Dose depends on you. I took it for over a year on effexor and it was superb for sleep, like an elephant dart increasing in strength with dose....but now, this combo with the nardil has the energy synergy effect for me. Perhaps you to. Not sure what your symptoms are, mine are anxiety mostly...if you are mostly depressive you might get a different effect I dont know. Worth a shot anyway.

keep smilin,

atypical depression, gad, social anxiety
75mg nardil

i used adrafinil with parnate. its a lot cheaper.

you can also fast, and thats free. not eaing increases orexinergic activation, just like the -afinils do. taking drugs is more fun than a breakfast of coffee tho.

Woah! That might be part of why i often hate eating so much and why it makes me tired and less stimulated. Very interesting piece of info thanks!

Just so you know, i could be mistaken but from everything you said it sounds like the trazadone's serotonin reuptake inhibiting properties (along with Nardil's potent reduction of serotonin metabolism) are overriding its 5-HT2A [and others?] antagonism. And this would make sense, since only an *extremely* minimal inhibition of serotonin reuptake is needed to strongly potentiate serotonin transmission on Nardil (which of course is why SSRIs are highly contraindicated on Nardil). And on the rare occasions when i have had a tiny tiny amount of an SRI on Nardil (when i was running low and needed to be on lower dose of Nardil until i got more, and wanted to help mitigate withdrawal-- yes this is extremely risky and of course absolutely not recommended) it made me extremely energetic, physically anxious, and muscle tension, increased body temperature etc.-- all symptoms of mild serotonin syndrome or at least over-stimulation of serotonin receptors. This sounds like what is going on with you to some degree, esp since trazodone is typically almost universally so sedating.
Discontinue or not i'm not sure. Just be aware of this and be careful.
