insomnia--what should I ask pdoc for?

Posted by raisinb on February 3, 2009, at 23:26:24

Well, the dreaded thing has happened--I've had terrible stress in the past couple of weeks and Lunesta has stopped working for me. I see my pdoc this week and I'm wondering what to ask her for to help me sleep.

What I've tried:

Ambien for 2 and a half years--didn't work so well after six months, eventually stopped working at all.

Remeron--even at the smallest dose, can't wake up, makes me terribly hung over and weepy the next day. Also can't focus on anything but food.

Xanax XR--I have only taken this for the past few nights. It's worked off and on, but I don't have a scrip for it. A friend who wasn't using it gave it to me.

OTC products like Unisom and Sleepinal. Basically they have the same effect as Remeron. Not worth being useless and depressed the next day.

Thoughts?

Hi raisin didn't think lunesta pooped out. But 5mg of valium and .5 of regular greenstone xanax put me out. Been on benzos over 37 years so my me anyway guess they don't poop out quickly. BTW have lowered rather than raised doses over all these years. Sometimes needed nothing. Good luck. Love Phillipa

Have you ever tried magnesium citrate? 200 mg before bed helps me to get drowsy and sleep through the night. If nothing else, you could try it while you're waiting for your p-doc appointment since you can get it OTC.

Hey,

I just recently started trazodone (a very sedating AD) for maoi induced insomnia and find a small dose (25 to 50mg) knocks me out like an elephant dart. There is a bit of a hangover the next day (although it feels more like a "slowing" or "dulling" of emotion and energy to me) but it goes away after the first week im told.

keep smilin,

Ugh, all those Z drugs do is hypnotise you!! And they make you flakey when they wear off, much like Benzos. I did insomnia for about 8 years and the best thing that ever happened to me was Olanzapine 5mg at night. End of. For about a week I was dopey but after that its just been sleepy dreamy time for me for about 3 years now. Wish my dumb *ss GP woulda prescribed an AAP when I first presented, it would have saved me half a decade and two relationships. ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ; )
