Stopping Effexor and going to Lexapro

Posted by homemommy on January 23, 2009, at 10:03:13

Today is the first day of my Dr weining me off of Effexor and onto Lexapro. I take 1/2 my dose of Effexor and 1/2 the dose of Lexapro for 1 week. I will let you know how it goes.

Hi Trudy. Lexapro is one of the more effective SSRI antidepressants. Both Effexor and Lexapro make good first choices in my opinion. I would just note that a significant number of people develop anxiety after they have been taking Lexapro for 2 weeks. It then disappears within a week for most people.

Good luck!

WOW thanks for letting me know that. I am just really hoping it has less side effects and that I dont get withdrawls from the Effexor.

Yes, I hope for you the same thing. Please post your experiences as you go along so that others can learn from you. I am particularly interested to know how well your doctor's cross-over strategy works to prevent Effexor withdrawals.

All mine over the years have always used crossover maybe that's why no withdrawals sometimes just being off the add and just benzos immediately felt better as drug wore off. I thought lexapro had initial anxiety start up effects and that a benzo was indicated for some during that period?? Love Phillipa

I like Lexapro. I tolerate it well and it's helping my depression a good deal. I even have a little bit of a sex drive, though it takes years to have an orgasm :)

That is the main reason I switched to Lexapro. I hope it helps the sex.

Today is the 6th day trying to get off Effexor. Yesterday on day 5 I only took Lexapro. And guess what?? NO WITHDRAWLS!!! Today is the second day to be Effexor free and only on Lexapro. So far it is a success. My energy just keeps increasing and I actually have been sleeping better. I don't get nausea everyday at 4pm like I used to. I will keep you updated!!

Still no side effects from stopping Effexor and switching to Lexapro. I feel better than I have felt in a long time. I dont get nausea at all during the day like I used to.

Wow! i can't believe I found this thread.
I've been taking 75mg of Effexor XR for about a year for migraine and it has been very effective. Five days ago, my neurologist had me switch directly to 10mg of Lexapro because I told her my cholesterol had shot up 25% over the past year.
I've now had migraines for the past 3 days, including a monster that I am just coming out of.
Do you think it's too late to try a slower transition?
Have any of you had an increase in cholesterol on the Effexor?
Thanks
