Zanax vs. Valium - Questions?

Posted by Cseagraves on February 2, 2009, at 19:44:47

My pdoc has given me a prescription today for valium. (5 mg per tablet) He said to take 1 to 2 tablets before bed. I have been taking zanax for years, just to tweek whatever ssri I was on. (.5 if I needed it during the day) A couple of weeks ago, he wanted me to take 2mgs of zanax at night for sleep. Tried that and would still wake up after about 5 hours of sleep. The problem with that is I feel so hungover the next day and I have an awful headache.

We have tried everything else for sleep, so I asked him about valium instead of zanax because from what I've read, it is more sedating. Could someone tell me how it has worked for you if you've used it.

I also heard that it helps you to get off zanax.

I just hate taking anything that I haven't taken before without knowing what to expect.

Also, I will be starting Marplan on Thursday.

Thanks,

Courtney

Taken both currently valium and .5 of xanax at bedtime. Found as got older no matter how much of a med or what benzo it was still woke in 4-5 hours. At least valium carries into the next day with the longest half-life of benzos. Klonopin being number two but that depressed me horribly. Soon as off it went away. They do say xanax has a small antidepressant effect. Don't take any meds during the day. Only bedtime. Yes they do detox off xanax with valium. Cutting down on valium now as getting older just don't seem to need as much. Have been off of all meds for periods of time. Just stopped them. Nothing. But that is me. Good Luck. Phillipa

Valium (Diazepam) is considered to be a long acting benzodiazepine - and therefore more likely to leave you with a slight hangover the following morning if taken before bed.

It does have a sedating effect; however, I use it probably more during the day than at night before bedtime.

I wouldn't be overly concerned, I have used Valium over the past six years, and it has been an absolute lifesaver in the past. I sometimes wonder if I would have made it this far without it.

The only time it has faltered is one is when I took it regularly and found that it seemed to be losing some of it's effectiveness.

If it's worrying you, could you not take it while you are away from work i.e. on a day off / weekend? At least then you could see how it effects you while you were in familiar surroundings?
