Zyprexa user - HELP please

Posted by Orangecat on December 21, 2008, at 0:36:19

hello, I am new to this board and new to Zyprexa. I have been taking 5 mg. for 2 weeks now and it has helped tremendously to get me from a state of wanting to go into the hospital, to doing pretty well. For the record, I am bi-polar and am taking the Zyprexa with a bevvy of other meds. So far, I have really noticed the increase in appetite - I could eat my computer desk. My memory has also become shot. But I am concerned about the extrapyramidal side effects. For Zyprexa users, what should I look out for with extrapyramidal side effects. I remember my aunt who couldn't stop wiggling her tongue in her mouth. And do you get these side effects right away, or is it only after a few months of use
Thanks for your help

I've been taking zyprexa for 10 years and not even the slightest of EPS. They are very uncommon with zyprexa.

I've found that I think much clearer with zyprexa. Could it be one of your other meds?

One thing to look out for is diabetes or raised blood sugar readings. You can use Metformin to control that. The other thing metformin can do is control the hunger and weight gain from zyprexa!

What other meds do you take?

I was on Zyprexa 5mg for 8 years, along with prozac. I had no problems at all until about year 7, at which time I noticed shakey knees in the morning only, and an eyelid and a part of a cheek muscle that would twitch sometimes. Fingers also got a little shakey.

I was also diagnosed with mercury toxicity from amalgam fillings, and am suspect of the neuropsychiatric disease Lyme, so either or both of those could be the direct cause or a contributing factor. I do not feel I could possibly point the finger at zyprexa itself.

thanks Bleauberry. I have been on many meds, but anything that has extrapyramidal side effects really worries me. I spent a month in the psych ward last summer getting off a vast amount of meds I had been using. I had horrid problems getting off of 300 mg. of Effexor XR, along with about 7 different meds I was on. Right now I am on Celexa, Tegretol, Wellbutrin XR, Ativan PRN, and the Zyprexa. I had to drop Topamax, my mood stabilizer, because I had a bad bout of kidney stones. The Zyprexa is working quite well - I suppose I just should make myself well aware of the side effects, but for right now, let it do its thing.
