I'm seriously considering switching doctors. It's not that I don't like my current Psychiatrist it's that she's not very flexible and doesn't seem to truly listen to anything I have to say. Essentially, she tells me what "will" work and writes the Rx for it. Well, what I've had doesn't work and she doesn't seem to want to seek other options.
Is it difficult to change doctors in the same geographic region?

If you're using health insurance, sometimes it will only cover psychiatrists in network or sometimes you need a referral from your primary care doc.

See I was just thinking I could bring my bottles of prescriptions in that I'm currently on, give to her/him any of the Rx's that we decide to get away from, and explain why I've switched.
Plus, the current doc is about an hour drive and that's a secondary reason for switching.

Anthony - after eight years of seeing my Pdoc, I am thinking of changing also. He is about an hour away also, his office hours are barely tolerable (spends most of his day at a hospital), and he seems confused as to why I am not "better?"
I just went two or three years without feeling depressed and only having twice/year maintenance visits. I'd call that progress.
Anyway, I am extremely depressed and unmotivated again and need to see him.
On the plus side, he is an esteemed doc who is not benzo phobic (I take Klonopin), and is usually open to sensible requests on my part when it comes to prescribing ADs. I have a history with him. He knows not to even bother suggesting Paxil or Effexor for me, for instance.
I am afraid of change..........

Case in point. I was able to get an appointment with my Pdoc today - in the middle of rush hour. I am grateful but it will be an hour commute each way plus the half hour visit.
This is the end of the thread.
