Cymbalta + exercise: tiredness and lowered ability

Posted by kb76 on September 22, 2008, at 11:16:12

Sorry if this is a double-post ... I'm new here.

Does anyone have any negative experiences when exercising on Cymbalta? I've been a competitive runner in the past, and for the past 2 years, have been rehabbing from injuries. I've been on Cymbalta for 3. Ran my last marathon 4 years ago, so never trained while on Cymbalta. I'm currently training for a charity marathon in honor of my father who passed in July 2008. This time, I sweat excessively, get dehydrated more easily, and endure an overwhelming feeling of exhaustion even while running shorter distances. I know I'm in much better shape than my performances reflect.

Just wondering what others have experienced with exercise and if I should consider enduring the withdrawal to help my training.

Thanks!

Are you taking the cymbalta for depression? And a hardy welcome to babble if not welcomed before. My question to you. I used to run never a marathon my knees couldn't take it and as I aged I had to cut down now can't run. But the highs I used to get from running seriously for me would have made depression impossible. So hence my question on depression. I did take 60mg at one time and nothing but noticed aches and pains when stopped it after about three months. I think I remember and answering a post of your a while back. So assuming things aren't better for you. Love Phillipa

Thanks for the welcome! Yes, it's my first time here. I take cymbalta for major depression which was first diagnosed about 14 years ago. Personally, cymbalta has been pretty good to me. (By the way - I do fear ever getting off the stuff after reading about withdrawal). I was on zoloft for a while before cymbalta, and if it weren't for the sexual side effects and weight gain I experienced, I would have continued with it. I had a short run of Lexipro in between and did not like the utter lack of motivation I felt when I was on that. Not to mention, I didn't feel it helped my depression.

Anyhow, I forgot about how cymbalta is being used to treat fibro patients and the pain-relieving benefits it can provide. Perhaps I should then stick with it! Your right, I am out of shape (I had broken both my feet and had a long rehabilitation back to normal ... cymbalta helped with that, too, I think).

I guess I was just wondering if anyone on this board had exercised both pre- and post- cymbalta and if they had any experiences to share. Thanks so much for your responses!

Hi, and welcome--
I had a similar experience on Zoloft. I can't prove it and never kept a record, but I noticed a lot more, and faster, muscle fatigue. I wasn't running a ton (maybe 3-4 miles a few times a week) when I started on Zoloft, but on it, I'd get exhausted after half a mile.

I seem to remember reading that muscle fatigue is a less-common side effect of SSRIs.

But it all may very well have come from depression. I lost a lot of weight from depression (17 lb) and I started smoking occasionally b/c of anxiety. So I'm sure I didn't have the best nutrition or carb reserves or respiratory capacity. So who knows.

raisin: muscle fatigue is definitely the way I would describe it! It's interesting that you experienced similar stuff on Cymbalta that I did. Thanks for your posts, everyone!

I have been on Cymbalta for almost 4 years. I lift weights regularly and compete in running races anywhere from 5K to 100 miles. I have not noticed any negative effects from the Cymbalta in the time that I've been taking it - absolutely none.

I do take a low dose (only 20mg) and I also take 150mg Wellbutrin, but that combo has helped my depression and not created any problems with my running or lifting.

Are you serious l00miles? Where do you run to and how does a person become depressed that runs that much and far I was fine when could run. Phillipa

I'm reading a running book right now that claimed outright that "running cures depression." I think I'm proof that running alone is not a cure.

All through my battles with depression, I've been able to stay focused on my running. I love being outside, in nature, and I think that my running, hiking, climbing and skiing keep me fit and feeling better overall. But, four years ago, I finished the toughest real 100 miler in the world (there is an event elsewhere that isn't really a run, but some sort of 100 mile scavenger hunt), and I was shocked by my reaction to finishing the race. Yes, I was exhausted after 6 months of intense training and 45+ hours of racing, but at the finish, I simply didn't care that much. This had been my dream for years, and yet I barely cared that I'd pulled it off. In my recovery from that race, I finally admitted to my wife that I needed to find a pdoc. She was thrilled because she and the kids had seen me become less happy and more withdrawn, and angry at times, over the past couple years. She wasn't thrilled that I'd acted like that, but because I recognized the issue myself and decided I needed help.

Not long after that, I found a pdoc who has been helping me ever since. Luckily, the combo of meds he has me on, including Cymbalta and Wellbutrin, has not affected my love of these sports or my desire to work hard and compete. I've had some other issues with Cymbalta (sexual side effects) and I'm working through those with my PCP and pdoc right now, but there's been no detriment to my exercise.

The 100 milers themselves are all over the place. I've run them in Arizona, Vermont, California, Colorado, Utah, and Ontario. It's not a big sport, but it's growing in popularity very quickly these days.
