I just started Wellbutrin XL yesterday morning. I've been subdued and I slept very well last night. I'm thinking maybe I should take it at night.
I was just wondering when other people take it and why? Does it sedate some people?

Usually Wellbutrin is energizing. The IR (immediate release) and SR (sustained release, 12 hr) should be taken in the morning. The XL (extended release, 24 hr) formulation is designed to slowly release over 24 hrs so you could probably take it AM or PM. Since everyone reacts differently, it's possible that it is sedating for you.

So if it is XL that means it is released about the same over 24 hours? I mean, would that mean I'd have the same side effects all day regardless of when I took it?
Thanks for your response.

On paper, yes. In reality, it might be different. Perhaps experiment with taking it in the morning for a week, at night the next week, and see which way you feel better. Just take care not to take it on both in the morning and at night when you transition.

You may also find that your response to the Wellbutrin changes over the next 2-4 weeks; I did. I was on the SR version (before they brought out XL), and I started out feeling mostly sedated by it for the first week or so, then it gradually got more energizing sooner, to the point where I absolutely could not take it at night and hope to sleep. The XL formulation may be more forgiving, but don't be surprised if you find it has a different effect on you a week from now!
Somebody on babble also warned me at the time that the side-effects (e.g. nervousness, insomnia) often come on earlier than the benefits. He encouraged me to hang in past the transition period until the really good feelings kick in -- which they did.
Good luck,
Tony

Wellbutrin is normally very stimulating; however, the XL can release very slowly. I would get my "peak" of energy about 5 pm when I took it in the morning. I wouldn't take it at night if I were you, but see how it goes.

Yeah, if it is released slowly for 24 hours I don't see how taking it in the evening would make it any different for me in the day. My "peak of tiredness" is about 6-7 hours after I take it so I'd be afraid that if I took it at night I'd have a harder time waking up in the morning. I just hope that it becomes more energizing for me too!
