I am curious about what in particular the change has been. How is it partially still working? Perhaps it is worth continuing since it is still partially working for you.

I took Nardil for several years and it worked great for me, but I ultimately got off it because I needed to lose weight. As with you, there were times when it seemed like it wasn't really working for some reason, and looking back now, I think it usually had to do with expecting the drug to override all emotional concerns or stresses going on in my life. It can't do that.

There's a great book called Undoing Depression that suggests that much of depression is really the result of habitual pattern of avoiding emotions. And as most true depressives know, depression is mostly a numbness and an inability to feel. A good cry feels good, so does a good rush of anger, but feeling dead does not feel good. The author suggests keeping an emotion journal to start to get in touch with the connections between events in our lives and the emotions which we quickly suppress. You'll start to feel better as soon as you begin to feel these suppressed emotions more. Just don't act out on them!

On a stricly psychopharmacological level, however, I also found that when I had been off Nardil for a few months or more and had then gone back on it, it would seem to be more effective. This might because my brain had become desensitized to the drug and needed to recover a bit. So based on my experience, if you can manage on something else for 2-3 months, then go back on the Nardil, you might find it significantly more effective.

Best, DRC

That sounds awful. Do you know what caused the problem?
