Medication and Weight

Posted by Zaney on April 27, 2008, at 21:29:54

I have tried several antidepressants (Lexapro, Wellbutrin, Prozac) and have gained weight with each. I have been on Prozac the last couple of years and it's not working very well right now so the Dr. is going to change me again. Is there an antidepressant that doesn't cause weight gain and perhaps the side effect could be weight loss?

Typically, Wellbutrin does not make people gain weight.

The people I work with (a bunch of physicians) typically take zoloft to lose weight and feel better.

Buyer beware, however, as I've read here that people have gained weight on it.

Seldom

My question is: "How long are they taking it?"

Most SSRIs seem to cause a little intitial weight loss, only to turn that around after a few months. (Paxil, in my experience, is an exception to that rule -- I started gaining day one.) Zoloft and Prozac might be more activating than the others, and thus case more initial weight loos, or less eventual weight gain, but they're still likely to cause weight gain in the end for many people.

Then again, they say those of us who are underweight to begin with tend to gain the most of serotinergic medications...

As for the initial question, Wellbutrin is known for the least likelihood of weight gain, but it's also the least robust for many people. Depending on the amount of weight gain, it might be best to try to mitigate the effect with other medications -- ranitidine, metformin, topiramate -- rather than trying to avoid it all together. It may not be possible to avoid it entirely.

Good luck...

Years ago took l0mg of paxil and was slim. My sister took higher doses and gained weight and switched to zoloft and lost weight. So a mystery to me??? Try and see? Love Phillipa

I am sure each person is different but I never gained weight on Effexor.

Effexor was a nightmare for me--I gained 25 lbs on it. :(
