pros see ect mem problems as minor--why?

Ever since I considered having ECT I have been struck by how cavalierly the professional mental health field looks at the memory problems that everyone I have ever heard of suffers from at least somewhat. EVERYONE! The brush off comes with "short-term problems". I cannot imagine what 2 months of retrograde amnesia would do to a professional who can't remember things on the job for a couple of months. Think about it!: Can't remember their clients names, the issues of the day, what stocks they recommended, the advice they have given etc. etc. This could have severe ramifications for both themselves and others. This is NO SMALL THING. This could end someone's career. How do you explain to your boss that you can't remember anything from the training you just took--either within the past 2 months or in the following 2 months??? It is terrible to put such a thing on someone without some guidance as to how to deal with it. And if the professionals just act like it is no bid deal and discount it that way then there is no counseling to help someone cope with this and no responsiblity shown to the patient or others who could be harmed. How about those who are ambivalent but may need this treatment? They need professionals who understand that months of memory problems could be catastrophic to them and they need someone to take this seriously and counsel how to deal with this. I just had to spout off about this. I am so sick to death of the brush off patients have been getting about this for years. "No big deal--it is just for a few months". Christ almighty--talk about having no common sense or empathy!

yep. Totally agree. Been there done that. My dad said it reminded him of the head traumas he saw in Vietnam. It did end a 10 year highly successful job. Just couldn't remember names, what to do on the job, how to do it, or even how to drive there. While ongoing short term memory has improved, it is subpar. Still 3 months of my life are totally missing from memory, and another couple months on each side rather sketchy. I don't know how I got my current job because I do not remember applying or the 3 interviews.

Cruel stuff ECT is.

What they should have done is checked cortisol, gluten intolerance, and mercury/lead toxicity, because those were the real problems all along. Total testing cost $200 and one week. Total ECT cost $12,000.00, a career, and 6 months missing in action.

My experience, seeing the industry in action on someone else, was that once you needed ECT you didn't count anymore.

During this period my mother was in hospital, the doctor would just come round at any time, and if she was eating a meal she would be brought out to see him. I'm not saying this bothered her. She was beyond that.

In retrospect I can see it so clearly.
She had agitated depression and couldn't sleep.
He prescribed 5mg Valium at night and moclobemide.
So you can see the knowledge of meds there.
I thought he showed a complete lack of common courtesy, not to speak of pharmaceutical competance.
