I just wanted you three to know how much your posts mean to me. I am new to Nardil, just started it today. I have read so many of your posts filled with encouragement and advice for Nardil users that I just had to say thank you.
I have printed out posts from all of you and I read them when I am scared or discouraged or afraid Nardil won't work or that the side effects will be intolerable.
If it weren't for your words of wisdom, your advice and support and encouragement, I don't think I would have the courage to go through all this- the Celexa washout, the inherent fear of Nardil, the horrible depression and fear while I wait for Nardil to begin working.
I just wanted to say thank you.

>Wow, Marsha,
Thanks for the really nice words. I just try to let people know that Nardil isn't as scary as it's reputation. And it has done wonders for me, so I think as end-of-the-line treatments go, it should be used way more often.
I'm really hoping you have a good experience with Nardil. Don't expect overnight results, and remember that many side effects fade in time. So my best advice is to just stick with it for a while and see how things go. Please keep us updated with your progress.
Thanks,
Phoenix1

Today is my second day on Nardil. The constipation has already kicked in. I need all the encouragement I can get because so far I feel really terrible. I keep reminding myself that in effect I am on no antidepressant right now- off the Celexa for two week and the Nardil hasn't had time to work. Honestly I don't know how I am going to get through the next weeks. I feel horrible. Very deeply depressed and very anxious. I can take care of the anxiety but I am taking way too much of my anxiety meds.
I don't know if I can stand it.

Marsha sorry I'm not on nardil but have known you so long I don't want to miss the goodness that hopefully will come for you. When you say take care of anxiety does that mean high doses of klonopin? Love Phillipa

Hi Phillippa,
I am waiting anxiously and depressed for the Nardil to start working. I am basically not on an antidepressant right now since the Celexa has worn on and the Nardil won't kick in for a while. I am miserable.
When I say I can take care of the anxiety I do mean I double up on my Klonopin dose. It scares me that I am having to do this. I am having to take as much as 8-10 mg a day or maybe 6mg of Klonopin plus 10 mg of Valium. I know my doctor wouldn't approve but I am doing all I know to do to stay out of the hospital. When I talk to him (it will be next Thursday most likely before I can get hold of him) I will tell him how my anxiety has skyrocketed and how much meds I am having to take. When I take the amount of Klonopin I am prescribed, it is like a just took a drink of water and an aspirin. Please pray for me.
Thanks for thinking about me and caring about me. You are a good friend.

Marsha I do know what you mean about the klonopin and understand. I think I should write you in a while. Love Phillipa

4WD, Thanks for the comments and I'm glad some of my posts have given you courage.
It took me a few months to get the kinks out of Nardil. The initial side effects that really got me were the drop in my BP. I have low BP anyway and when measured some days (yes, get a BP cuff if you don't have one), I went down to 60/40, no kidding. Luckily, I wasn't working during this time and could just lie down and drink lots of fluids to try and keep the BP up at a functional level, which for me is around 90/50-60. Lots of difficulties with balence and walking.
Also, the gas and subsequent constipation, were another issue. I have tried lots of meds for constipation and right now, I am finding that eating prunes, maybe 5 a day, keeps things moving down there. You can't stop taking something daily since once you get constipated it's too late except to use the big guns, which are no fun..
Other than that, I am functional and just started a job, the first time in almost 2 years, so that is the best news I can give to you. I do have most of my life back, but like all diseases that are chronic and remitting, you have to manage depression closely. Depression takes a course of it's own and with Nardil, it took me many months to smooth out the side effects.
I did gain about 20 lbs but I am now exercising and watching what I eat since I never needed to before.
Best of luck to you on this journey. I have not posted much lately because of my life changes, but I am grateful my posts helped you learn and get support from them...

I take it the BP problems abated with time.

Right now, I'm trying to eat a bowl of raw broccoli, celery and carrots most days for fiber. I also take Glycolax which is the prescription version of Miralax.

Since I only weigh about 110 and am 5"4' I guess I can stand to gain a few pounds. As I said if Nardil works, I will put up with the side effects. Its just waiting for it to work that is so hard. No real side effects yet. Today was my third day on Nardil.

4WD, the only med I know of to increase your BP is called ?, escapes my memory right now, but my father took it when his Parkinson's meds did this to him. The other thing is to take lots of salt and that med is somewhat like that. Now I remember it. It is called Florinef.
Boy are you tiny, I am tall and I won't even mention what I weighed before Nardil and now, too embarassed next to your stats! No wonder you are so forthcoming with that info! Like you said, weight gain may not be an issue for you.Prunes are the only thing that is working for me and much cheaper and natural than any product in the drugstore making someone rich. Lord knows I have spent more on meds than I have made in the past 25 years. Although the money making aspect of meds has only become a big issue in the last 10 years and all of those expensive meds only made me worse. No wonder health insurance is sky high based on all of the worthless meds that have been prescibed that cost a fortune.
Nardil is much cheaper than many meds but even Pfizer made changes in the med so that instead of taking 30 mg daily, you have to take much more. That must have been a sly marketing tactic and so invisible to the end user, who only cares about whether it works or not, unless you pay for it out of pocket. Then it can really hurt.

Hi,
I will buy prunes next time I am at the grocery store. It is good to know there is something available to raise blood pressure if needed. So far having no problems.

Like you said, weight gain may not be an issue for you.The only reason I am so thin is because of my anxiety. I am usually too scared to eat. It is hard to choke down food when you are scared and anxious. I also am a recovering bulimic. If I ever do have say, a craving for a dozen doughnuts, I can always eat them and then throw them up. That hasn't been an issue for a while now though. I'm hoping it won't return because of the Nardil. But if I have to choose between being a depressed thin person and a heavier or bulimic person who is happy, I'd take the happy any day. I've pretty much faced my fears about that and come to terms with it.

Lord knows I have spent more on meds than I have made in the past 25 years.
Amen. I have a box full of meds that I tried briefly and then quit. If I had back all the money I had spent on them, I could pay for my next years meds and have money left over.

Hope you are doing well.

Hi Phillippa,
I know I should probably weigh more but when you've had an eating disorder, you have a distorted body image. If I weighed 125, non of my clothes would fit and I would feel fat. I wouln't be fat, but I'd feel like I was. I don't look as thin as I sound. I wear a size six or sometimes a 4 depending on the brand. And I wear a medium in sweaters, etc.
