antabuse and marijuana

Posted by damiensmom on February 19, 2008, at 21:53:38

Hi,
I'm new and have searched the internet but can not find the answer. I am trying to quit drinking and have seen a doctor and am taking wellbutrin and ativan. I also belong to an online recovery group.
my question is, can I still smoke my marijuana and take antabuse? I did read something where there was one or two cases of a psychotic episode, but I also read it would just make me more lethargic. I enjoy marijuana and have never had any problem with it, unlike the alcohol which was starting to make me sick. I also drank alcohol for 30 years and that is why I tried the antabuse, so far I am doing well. Any help appreciated. -Elaine

Welcome!

In short, I think smoking pot will be fine with Antabuse. I've known of many people who have done this without problems.

Antabuse only works by effecting the way your body breaks down alcohol, thus making you sick if you drink. The only risk there may be is that Antabuse can effect the way some other drugs are broken down, possibly leading to elivated levels of either drug. Dont know if this would apply to cannabis though.

Here is a good description of how Antabuse works: http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/100000144.html

Well thanks a lot! I don't know why it was so hard to find information. The antabuse info online and what I got at the doctor's was sketchy at best.

I can't find any evidence for a psychotic reaction. There is one case report of hypomania, which resolved quickly on discontinuation of the marijuana.

Frankly, I'd be more concerned about the combination of Wellbutrin (bupropion) with Antabuse (disulfiram), as the latter is an inhibitor of the enzyme dopamine beta hydroxylase, responsible for the first step of the conversion of dopamine to norepinephrine. This is a theoretical concern, rather than a proven one......as you're already combining them it's less likely to prove adverse for you.

Thanks everyone! I have a long standing drinking problem. I've done my first 5 days in a row in a long time, hopefully as I get better I can help others. I'm doing okay but I have been really tired.(I actually didn't even smoke anything for a week too, so I do think its partly exhaustion or depression which is making me so tired)
I came out of it with a bit of depression, hopefully it will get better. Well when I have more time I'll look more at the site, it seems a bit overwhelming, the site, but I'm sure there's lots of good info.

oh one more thing, without starting a new thread, does anyone know the right antabuse dosage, I am about 165 lbs and was taking the one pill, 250's or whatever the one pill size is and was wondering if half would be enough, I don't want to make myself ultra sensitive. I only have a thirty day supply and maybe I won't need them long term.

when attempting to get sober

getting high on anything can mess with your sense of determination

as a recovering alcoholic i would strongly discourage smoking weed at this point

I take antabuse daily and smoke marijuana at night. I do not notice any ill effects and I have been doing it for a very long time.
