I don't know a lot about Deplin. But, even if it does affect you in some similar way (even if through all different channels) that Folic Acid does, I think that is a real waste. Especially if they are charging so much money for it. It's weird, but I got the same effects from high dose Folic Acid that many seem to complain about on Deplin. Nightmares, plus I had VERY increased anxiety. My Pdoc at the time mentioned to me that there was some research showing that high dose Folic Acid, B12, and some other B Vitamins (as well as choline) where very bad for people with bipolar illness. It caused a lot of rapid cycling. (At the time, I had been experimenting with these vitamins and feeling rotten, and that is why he brought it up. He is a very respectable psychopharmacologist at McMaster University in Hamilton Canada.)

> Deplin a marketing ploy?
I guess the conclusion one arrives at depends on whether or not they respond to it.
L-methylfolate (Deplin) is the bioactive form of folate that travels with ease across the blood-brain barrier. Folic acid is not bioactive. Nor does it enter the brain readily. Deplin is more of a drug than it is a supplement. "Medical Food"? It gets pretty confusing trying to find a place for Deplin in the pharmacopeia. Even so, the stuff seems to work for some people. Among the things left to discover about Deplin are the best dosing strategy and whether of not there is a "poop-out" phenomenon. Hopefully, a pattern of responsivity will emerge that indicates who is most likely to respond to Deplin and with what drugs it combines best.

Hi.
I am not currently taking Delpin. I believe I was experiencing diminishing returns as time passed. The response was most robust about a month after starting it. For now, I may use it occasionally to cushion the fall during an episodic worsening of depression.
To be honest with you, I am still undecided as to what role Deplin played in my feeling very well last month. Poop-out maybe? I would not have discontinued Deplin had my sleep not been so badly affected. I was having nightmares that ended up in causing me to fling myself off the bed and on the floor practically every night. This stopped happening upon the discontinuation of Deplin.
I guess we will just have to observe the trials of more people to see what therapeutic properties Deplin has in the long term.
I would just like to reaffirm that the benefits of Deplin as an adjunct to standard antidepressants does not become obvious for several months.
So far, Deplin has not found a stable role in my treatment.

Hello scott,
I'll tell the flat out deal with Deplin. I think it is a marketing tool to trick doctor into getting alternate treatment, when the patient who doesnt research that Folic acid can help, the drug companies came out with it, and said it will help. Most people i talk to, they dont know really much about deplin.
My first day of it, it gave me anixety. I little bit of irritibity, but after a series of weeks it gave me, a "boost", but it didnt increase the prozac effect at all. Only the energy feeling.
It wasnt a big loss after i stopped it at all. Prozac has provided me with the balance and energy to go out through the day. Even though i do get depressed on Prozac, it levels something in me. Im on 40mg. Plus its very cheap.
Its something really to help me focus that i lack right now. I am going to have to do something about. But with handling life, like a normal person would, prozac has provided that help.
Thanks.

I stopped taking it. Really Deplin isnt a miracle medication on an antidepressant, its a cocktail of Vitamen B's. It doesnt really increase the effect of an antidepessant. It increases energy.
I just stopped it. Ill find folic acid over the counter, but i still dont know if its more expensive than deplin.
thanks
