Do I Have Alzeheimers or Just Too Much on Mind?

Posted by Phillipa on December 18, 2007, at 18:06:40

Seriously I put a Christmas Card in my neighbors door today and I asked my husband if he had one for that neighbor too. I'd forgotten I did it a few hours ago. I'm always forgetting things. Right now there is what to do Christmas , surgery, money, doing the ebay, kids no telling me what's going on in their lives. Grandson has a serious problem no one will tell me what happened, new pdoc cancelled till March so only the old one, say something to my husband and forget. Does stress do this or is it Alzhiemers? How would I know the difference. MRI of head about 6 years ago showed normal for age. Thanks Phillipa

Hi Phillipa

It sounds like stress. If it were Alz. your husband would probably notice changes in personality etc. You would do more than just forget about a card.

I also think that meds do something to our brains and impair cognitive abilities.

Hi PJ

That's what benzos do to me.

They really disturb recent memory.

Long term memory seems unaffected.

Alzheimers is more than forgetfulness it would be holding the card and using it for say a paperweight. It is forgetting the use of things too. Not just forgetting things. Not knowing the neighbors or your husband momentarily at first and then for longer periods with longer stretches.

Here is more:

Symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease

The U.S. Agency for Health Care Policy Research provided this list of questions to help recognize the condition:
Learning and retaining new information. Does the person misplace objects and/or have trouble remembering appointments or recent conversations? Is the person repetitive in conversation?
Handling complex tasks. Do familiar activities like balancing a checkbook, cooking a meal, or other tasks that involve a complex train of thought, become increasingly difficult?
Ability to reason. Does the person find it difficult to respond appropriately to everyday problems, such as a flat tire? Does a previously well-adjusted person disregard rules of social conduct?
Spatial ability and orientation. Does driving and finding one's way in familiar surroundings become impossible? Does the person have problems recognizing familiar objects?
Language. Does the person have difficulty following or participating in conversations? Does the person have trouble finding the words to express what they want to say?
Behavior. Does the person seem more passive or less responsive than usual or more suspicious or irritable? Does the person have trouble paying attention?
The onset and symptoms of Alzheimer's disease are usually very slow and gradual, seldom occurring before the age of 65. It occurs in the following three (3) stages:

Stage 1: forgetfulness, poor insight, mild difficulties with word-finding, personality changes, difficulties with calculations, losing or misplacing things, repetition of questions or statements and a minor degree of disorientation

Stage 2: memory worsens, words are used more and more inappropriately, basic self-care skills are lost, personality changes, agitation develops, can't recognize distant family or friends, has difficulty communicating, wanders off, becomes deluded and may experience hallucinations

Stage 3: bedridden, incontinent.

Yes, a lot of fears -- and none that are intentionally your fault, as I wrote to you, it is that time of year and everything is frenetic and compounds things for people. The small amount of Valium that you're on may compound it slightly since you've been on it for years but I think psychological aspects far outweigh what's going on. That's just my unlicensed opinion.

I'd like to add my two cents - hope that's okay. I've been reading about Alzheimer's and one substance, called galantamine is sometimes used to help rebuild memory. Interestingly, while this is a prescription drug, it is also an herb, and some nutrition centers or web sites sell galantamine as a product called GalantaMind. I don't know if it can truly be as effective as the prescription form of the drug, but some people I've read about swear by it and seem to have gotten a good reaction from taking the over the counter kind. I tried it, and to the best of my knowledge, it made no difference, but then I only tried a low dose, and probably not for long enough to get an effect from it. Just a suggestion, and if the problem lasts past the frenetic Christmas rush, it might be worth a try.

Phillilpa,

Don't worry. I strongly believe it's stress.

Not long ago I was forgetting stuff like crazy. I'd ask my husband the same thing 3 times in one evening.

Actually, I just realized that I bought something called "Remember-Fx" at the drugstore. It was basically ginseng. By the end of the bottle, my memory wasn't nearly as bad, but by that time also, I might have been having less stress! (lol - can't remember!).

Anyway, Phillipa, memory problems are certainly part of the reaction to stress, so please try to relax about it, okay?

much love, Kath

My father had Alzheimers and his doctor gave me the best short description of the difference between normal forgetfulness and Alzheimers.

"Forgetting where you put the car keys is normal.
Forgetting what car keys are used for is Alzheimers."
