Been reccomended Provigil by a couple people on this board for a fast acting, stimulating AD. Anybody currently using Provigil as an AD. How does it work? Thanks!

See my post under your other thread "most activating AD...". Provigil seems to work on dopamine and norepinephrine uptake systems, but the exact mechanisms are only now being explored. I've used it in conjunction with several antidepressants (now Cymbalta) and found it very helpful for amotivational, anhedonic symptoms, focus, and lethargy. Don't know if it would be enough of an antidepressant used alone though.

I do use Provigil as an antidepressant, almost as a monotherapy. Doses are shed all along the day for this indication, ranging from 300 to 500 mgs. Make sure you dispense it evenly otherwise will have to suffer huge crashes. Even spreading the dose causes crashes in the initial stage yet if you are patient enough; can overcome it gradually.By and large, stimulant like crashes occur sometimes making it hard to cope. Using a mood stabilizer like Neurontin may be of some help.
Hope this helps.

I really like provigil.. I still take another AD but provigil has given me back some energy to get things done.. it does bright my mood.. The downside is that you do develope a tolerance to it and insurance doesn't want to pay for it.. Most have to get preauthorized.. Still sometimes I take provigil in the morning to perk up and end up going to sleep.. I am not sure why this happens. Seems impossible.. but it't not..lol

I like Adrafinil better than Provigil. It is slower to kick in and more subtle, but for me had more antidepressant effect when it did kick in and it lasted for years. Often we hear of provigil pooping out in weeks.
Regardless of which one, I never liked either of them by themselves. They seem to go best with an SSRI. I didn't like them much with lexapro or zoloft, but I liked them a lot with prozac.
This is the end of the thread.
