benzos aren't working

Posted by MarlaE on October 31, 2007, at 19:09:48

I started taking benzos in 1998.In my early 20s I was highly addicted taking up to 50mg. a day. At 24 I attempted to stop but became quite sick.Unable to function at all.Now at 30 I am very sick. The benzos were helping a few months ago and now nothing.I started taking an antidepressent about a week ago.Ive been sick, physically and mentaly for so many months now I just cant take it.I really dont know what to do.I also know I've done extensive damage to my brain. I'm extremely slow almost in canotonic state. And cant function without now 2mg of klonopin a day. Though they dont work.If the benzos would work I would be functioning at an entire different level.I really wish I could get off of these.I just get so sick and it doesnt seem to stop.If there is anybody who could offer me some helpful tips that would be great,I just wish I could feel the benzos. Sincerely,Marla

You know when I worked in psych this not working of high doses of benzos required an inpatient detox program cause if you suddenly stop high doses seizures can occurr. I'd ask my doc tomorrow to see if he can get you inpatient and seriously good luck . Phillipa

Hello Marla :)

How is your appetite? Not good I'm guessing. The medication (any medication) will not work to it's full potential without adequate nutrition, I learned this when I had a really "lucky" brush with Breast Cancer. I only had to have 2 cuts for biopsy then another to get clean margins, but the stress from worrying, well I could not eat. I was taking over 15mg (Total) of xanax in a day, and they would ease my anxiety for only an hour or so. Try some "Ensure, or Boost" those high protien drinks. They are stock full of vitamins and good fats, I ate avacados until they were coming out of my ears :) and if I can be so bold? The Boost really got my appetite working again. I don't know what your condition is, but nutrition is so important for your meds to work. I'm not a doc or nurse, just sounds like I've been where you are and it's a frightening place when the anti-anxiety pills won't work. Indeed very frightening. Try some Boost or Ensure, and definitely talk with your doctor. My heart goes out to you and please keep us informed of your condition. You are cared for, and don't give up. All my best!!

Faith know the feeling as I am about to have ultrasound for a larger than normal right ovary for a postmenapausal woman and we know what that can mean and a chip in breast after biopsy for same but that was benign calcification. Also have to have surgery for cystocele, rectocele, and falling tipped uterus and the bladder is kinking of the urthetha making peeing hard. But I've not increased benzos trying to stay occupied as they no longer really work except for sleep. Phillipa

Aww I'm sorry to hear that Phillipa, so sorry. I just freaked out and haven't calmed down yet I think. PTSD perhaps? I don't really know...but I've been having anxiety probs most of my adult life so it was not just the bc. I'll be thinking about you through all of this and keep me posted ok? Ask about a proper dose of that Lyrica as well, I just can't imagine your anxiety level at the moment :(

50mg of which benzodiazepine?

Unable to function at all.Now at 30 I am very sick. The benzos were helping a few months ago and now nothing.I started taking an antidepressent about a week ago.

A week is a rather short period in psychiatric time

Ive been sick, physically and mentaly for so many months now I just cant take it.I really dont know what to do.I also know I've done extensive damage to my brain.

Do you know this for a fact, have you had any neurological testing? I admit true addiction as opposed to habituation is a whole different ball game.

I'm extremely slow almost in canotonic state. And cant function without now 2mg of klonopin a day. Though they dont work.

If you are "functioning" at any level with 2mg of clonazepam you're not completely off.

If the benzos would work I would be functioning at an entire different level.

And a lot of us wish we could be functioning at an entirely different level, including us

I really wish I could get off of these.I just get so sick and it doesnt seem to stop.If there is anybody who could offer me some helpful tips that would be great,I just wish I could feel the benzos.

Klonopin is very subtle and a drug not everyone "feels".

If you truly feel that you're addicted and not have a new powerful anxiety disorder I suggest a psychiatrist with an addiction specialty.

No, benzodiazepines are not something to drop cold turkey, I still have some reaction to one after ten years but that's quite different. I'm medication sensitive and I didn't know better than to taper (tapers can be much faster and still be perfectly safe than people really think but I'll leave that up to personal opinion)

Whilst there are those who adhere to benzo.org.uk so I won't get slapped, remember it does not adhere to HON or any seal of good health practice on the net. Be cautious of what you read and of any places that may have scare tactics.

Yes, actual benzodiazepine addiction is real. This is why real health counseling is important and not sites that may make you feel worse. Its up to you though ultimately to battle what I know must be awful. I'm not minimizing your pain by saying what I've said, please don't take it in the wrong context

tidings

Thanks,I truly appreciate everybodies feedback. At 19 I started taking 50 1mg xanax pills a day for 5 years.Once stopping at 24 I couldn't get out of bed for months or socialize. So after about 8 months or so after that I started on klonopin.I now believe that I am benzo sensitive due to the powerfulness of my early experiences with Benzos.Even at 25 once returning on them, they didn't act as such a powerful agent though were somewhat theruputic. Now nothing,I started taking 20mg of Lexapro about a week ago. It's just the daily pains of what I have to go thrue everyday.I think often of the damage that has been done to my brain.I dont know for certain, though I feel pretty acurate about this.My memory is also quite terrible this though seems quite recent,10 months ago I was taking 30mg valium a day and they were working quite well, then I stopped taking them and I haven't felt them since.I possibly may come across as an addict, but these pills I believe have done irepairable damage in which I need them to function.I should get some kind of Nuerological testing. done.In 2003 a Dr. told my parents that I could have some nerve ending damage and he gave me a nuerological test and stated that my memory wasn't so good.I really dont know,Do benzos respong to your gaba receptors? I wonder if Gaba Plus could help.Anyways enough for now. Thanks again for all the positive feedback.
Marla
