Guys/Gals...just want to emphasis that with Nardil, it can take longer- sometimes much longer- than the SSRI's and TCA's to 'kick-in'
Sometimes up to 12 weeks.
Also, u may need a dose of up to 90mg.....
Love you all!
Ace:)

I've been on nardil for 3 weeks, only 60 mg. Even in this short time it has been miraculous for me and the only side effect really has been insomnia. I can't believe how good this stuff is after all the terrible times i've been through on every other AD.

Old user...took Nardil originally in 1989 at 30 mg, had immediate relief of depression, felt "normal" a little over a year or two. Unfortunately the dose was never increased since Prozac had come out and the SSRI's were all the rage then.
Interim years: on every AD, antipsycotic abd mood stabalizer known to man with some good and bad responses but never as good as the MAO's. Took Marplan with great success in 1994 until Roche stopped making it. Left me high and dry for many years, lost alot of my life to depression from 1995 to today. I could work but never at any sustained level of success.
New user: started again in May 2007 at my urging, not my pdocs. Tried to go to 60 mg but had extreme hypotension (70/40) and GI side effects (Gas, constipation). Now at 45 mg with good response, could be better(?) at a higher dose if I was able to tolerate it, so will keep at 45 for now.
I also take Nortriptyline 50 mg. Perhaps this is needed to augment a lesser response from a lower dose of Nardil. Thanks Ace (NardilChampion) for being there and helping keep Nardil on the radar screen with your success on it.
Lots of us are on it now and your messages have alot to do with that!

SSRI's= mediocrity! and $$$$$$$!
I feel your dose should have been increased- obviously.

I know what you mean when you say "lost a lot of my life to depression" This is totally understandable you feel this way. But, also, by feeling this way, in many ways you are strengthening yourself, you are getting to know yourself. You are still alive- so hope and dreams can still exist in this world. Maybe try as best as you can to turn this deprssion into a strength. I know all this sounds so easy, and when your in hell you just want to vanish. But just hang on to things. The fact that you have endured is, in my estimation, a testimony to your character. You have been in hell and still come through the otherside.

Mav, I had constant dizziness on Nardil as my BP was always under 100. It never went away completely although I did reduce my dose to 45 with some improvement. I eventually added Nortiptylline and Synthroid and my dizziness has gone away...Stargazer

I'll have to get my pressure checked again incase it has dropped, the GP did mention that Nardil was likely to make it drop but when we checked it twice last week (before the dizzyness started)it was still at it's normal high of 140/100 :(

Mav, you must get a BP cuff so you can tell if your BP elevates in reaction to a food or medication. That is how I knew I had a reaction to a Amphetamine I took with Nardil. I got the headache but may not always be a true indication of this reaction. I used my BP cuff and said, Uh oh, my Bp is 230/130 and my normal BP is around 90/60.
And I treated myself at home with a medication called Nifedipine which my doc has given me for a hypertensive reaction. I used that and watched my BP fall back into an acceptable range, 140/80, high for me but out of the crisis range.
I would advise anyone on a MAO to buy a cuff, they are readily avalable today for under $50. It's well worth it rather than ended up in the ER with a normal pressure that you could have taken yourself. Plus many of the ER docs have not seen a MAO reaction and may treat it incorrectly.
Obviously you should always go to the ER if you suspect a hypertensive reaction unless you are someone who is comfortable dealing with this on their own. I would have gone to the ER if my BP stayed in the range above 200/100 and didn't respond to Nifedipine, like it did.
