Rebound Depression? Off of SSRI for 2 months.

Posted by fuzz54 on September 11, 2007, at 12:33:04

I have a question to those who are more informed than myself on going off SSRIs. I've been on a few different SSRI meds for 2 years before I went through problems with nausea and headache recently. I succesfully tapered off the SSRI to see if it was causing the nausea. It's been 2 months now off of the SSRI and just over the last 3 or 4 days I've noticed some higher than normal depression and anxiety starting to come back into my life. I figured it would take 6 weeks for depression to come back if it took 6 weeks for the SSRIs to help with the depression. What has other people's experience been with rebound depression/anxiety after going off of SSRI's after long term (year or longer) use? Does rebound depression and anxiety usually happen sooner than 2 months if it does occur? How much longer does it take to go away if it does occur?

Since being on the SSRIs the depression has become manageable but I've always wondered if I was going to be a short-term or lifetime user of SSRIs and depression meds. Figuring out if this is just rebound depression or something more long-term will help me in deciding to stay on the meds.

FYI: I'm still on 3 mg of Klonopin per day and had problems with dysthymia (chronic minor depression), moderate but not severe GAD, and occasional severe depressive episodes before I went on the SSRIs.

Jake

That's exactly what I would like to know also. Thanks for starting this thread. Phillipa

I too. My depression is back and I have been off since April. I had no depression for I think about 2 month and then wham. And now it is coming back in waves. The anxiety is ever present though. Some days I can handle it some days I can't. The depression I have to ride it out. I am not sure I can keep this up without meds and I have stop going to the therapist.

I have been researching my issues and I have been diagnosised with dissociation but that doesn't seem to be a clear cut diagnosis and this was the therapist, so another question from me is how is the best way to find a doctor, p-doc as you guys refer to them. I am very fearful of them for some reason too and this is causing anxiety too. But I know I need to because the anxiety and depression is increasing and I don's want the GP help anymore. I second the thanks for this thread!!! RK

Finding a good p-doc can either be done by talking to friends and family who might already have one or by just looking at the phone book or a respected hospital if there is one nearby. I'm sure there are other ways, but I was lucky enough to find a good one through my local hospital's mental health department. And you really are doing the right thing by going to see a p-doc since most GP's are not really qualified to treat anything too out of the ordinary when it comes to depression and anxiety. And going to the p-doc wasn't too bad for me beyond the first visit. The first visit is mostly getting background on your diagnosis and then they mostly focus on getting the symptoms of your depression under control with different meds. There wasn't much therapy talk with my p-doc. She was very straight and to the point on how I was feeling and what we could try from a med standpoint to help, which I liked. Many appointments were 20 minutes or less for me.

I'm lucky enough to have klonopin (4 mg per day if needed) to deal with the anxiety to some degree, but the depression and associated pessimism in my thoughts is coming back. Good luck! Let's hope someone can shed some light on this or at least share their experiences. I am starting to think I'll have to go back on the meds despite the side effects, but maybe at the lowest effective dose this time.

Seems some pdocs are going back to lower doses now if I could find another here. Tried four. Phillipa

Hi Jake,
I'm really glad you posted this... I've noticed that almost exactly two months upon SSRI disocninutation, I have a severe rebound of symptoms that are worse than when I initially took the medication. It's very strange and warrants study.
The worst experience I ever had was when I went off of Effexor, the rebound was excrutiating, and I started taking a small dose for GAD, and felt like a loon within a few months of stopping it. I wish I had more answers, and am curious to see if others have answers.
