I've been on lithium 1200mg for a while now for mild cyclothemia and social anxiety.....recently smoked marijuana for the first time in years and it definitly wasn't how I remembered it. My mind basically turned to molasses for a few hours, it was HORRIBLE. Not too mention intense anxiety, paranoia, nothing I ever had when I used to be a smoker.
If anybody has smoked pot on lithium can you tell me if you've had similar reactions and if you know, why this happens?
Thanks

I have heard that lithium can intensify / alter the reactions to many drugs. I read that lithium can increase the effects of LSD.

> ThanksI have no idea why this would happen, but perhaps the lesson here is never to combine an illegal subtance with a psych med. It's just asking for trouble, cause you never know how the combo will effect you. Several years ago, I tried pot (the one and only time) and I ended up having the weirdest nightmare I've ever had. It was almost as if I could see clearly into my soul. Hyper-lucid is how I would describe it.
It tripped me up for months afterwards and took a while for me to recover.
So do yourself (as well as those around you) a favor: combining illegal, mind altering substances with a legal psychotropic med is just asking for trouble. So why do that to yourself?

That's what hallucinogens tend to do Malcolm. It's rarely a pleasant experience for people who are chronically depressed or anxious though.
I took MJ with Parnate and selegiline and had no problems, but two others here said they'd taken it with EMSAM and had bad experiences. Not sure why it matters so much whether the drug is legal/illegal? Some combos just don't mix well regardless of their legal status.

I often want to ask that question when I see people considering ECT or taking antipsychotics for depression and insomnia. Are the consequences really worth it? I suppose for some they must be.

Sometimes however, people report an elevated mood for a while after certain psychedellics wear off.
Perhaps due to drug induced 5-ht2a recpetor downregulation.
My friend had a bad experience on LSD, but he said after it wore off he felt better than normal for a few weeks.
