How do MAOI's compare to benzos for anxiety?

Posted by saturn on May 9, 2007, at 21:42:57

MAOI's are perhaps the gold-standard for SP (?).

Are they comparably effective for GAD, PD?

And lastly, per the subject headline, how do they compare to benzos in treating these anxious disorders?

Thanks...Peace...Saturn.

Yup. While they are also anxiolytic, I get the impression the MAOI's are also stimulating, and really question whether they'd be as effective as a benzo for pure anxiety.

I think you really need to take a benzo with Parnate to help sleep and counteract the jitteriness it can cause at high doses. I've always wondered why so many people seem to 'need' large doses of benzos with Nardil if it's such an outstanding anxiolytic in its own right. Benzos can cause and exacerbate depression when used at high doses for a long time while MAOIs are obviously antidepressants so have the advantage of helping with both mood and anxiety.
