TRAZADONE

Posted by SandyWeb on March 20, 2007, at 13:28:50

I took this only ONE night for insomnia, and ended up throwing the bottle away. The sleepiness hit within about 10 minutes (I was up reading a book because I was expecting about an hour). My tongue felt so thick that I could hardly talk, and I could barely move my legs to get into bed. Now with that being said, I thought I had hit the jackpot and finally found a med that would allow me to sleep.

Well, the next thing I know, my nose closes completely up. I had to breathe through my mouth for about 5 hours (until my nose opened back up), and needless to say I didn't sleep during that time because my dry tongue kept sticking to my dry mouth!! And then the following day, I had a massive migraine that had me flat on my couch the entire day.

That happened maybe 3 years ago, and I've been thinking of giving Trazadone another try. It may have been the combination of meds that I was on at the time that caused my nose to close up (I can't remember what cycle of the lab rat routine I was in at that point!).

The following are the meds I'm on now. Do these have anything counterproductive to the nose closing (I guess it would be histamine, right?).

Effexor XR, clonazepam, and Lopressor SR (beta blocker).

Thanks for your help. I would LOVE to sleep.

God bless,
Sandy

trazadone is also used to treat migraines (pre-emptively), one of the off-label uses - I'm not sure if your headache could've been caused by the trazadone. Could be a coincidence - but I would try it again.

I dunno, it sounds too awful.

Is there nothing else (humane) you can take that will allow some sleep?

I have the same problem with nasal congestion on trazodone (Seroquel and Remeron too). It felt like I was being suffocated and heavily sedated at the same time. Terrifying, and not conductive to restful sleep. Melatonin 3-9mg along with valerian/passionflower/hops tablets have been more effective and better tolerated for me.

Hi one woman cine:

Yes, I thought it was funny that Trazadone is used to treat migraines. I get them from time to time, so I thought that the med might have an added benefit other than for my insomnia. But I really do believe that the migraine was caused by the massive stuffiness for about 5 hours that was unrelenting. I had to keep drinking water every few minutes because my mouth was sticking together from breathing through it....and all I wanted to do was sleep, but couldn't because I couldn't BREATHE. Lol. As soon as the stuffiness cleared, the migraine was there...and stayed with me the entire following day. Kept me knocked to the couch! So I think that even if a med is made to work on migraines, there will just be certain conditions that will aggravate on assault on the poor wittle brain.

Thanks for the info. But it did seem like it would have helped with the insomnia. Dang!

God bless,
Sandy

Hi Declan,

Gosh, don't I wish. I've tried almost everything out there, including OTC (which, incidentally, give me horrible restless leg syndrome). Even the meds that knock people out, like Remeron and Seroquel, just never even touched my insomnia one bit. I've never tried Valium, but I'm afraid to ask for it because doctors seem to shy away from its use. I don't want to look like I'm drug-seeking, but I've been seeing a doctor about my psych and insomnia problems for 4 years this month (after YEARS of being too humiliated to approach a doctor about my mental state). My doctor is so good to me, and I'm scared of making him suspicious of my intentions. Just paranoid, I know, but it's so difficult to find a doctor that you can click with.

I was just wondering if the Trazadone reacted that way to my body because of the other chemicals I was taking at the time. I don't know. I'd really like to get more than 2 hours of sleep per night.

Thanks for your concern. Take care.

God bless,
Sandy

Hi Quintal,

I'm sorry you had the same reaction as I did on the Trazadone. Wasn't it a horror?? The nurse had never heard of such a thing when I told them about it, but the pdoc stated that yes, it could happen. GREAT. Looks like you and I are one of the few with that lovely side effect. And suffocating is right! Jeepers. I had to keep telling my foggy brain that as each minute passed, the med was moving more and more out of my system. As I kept gulping water to keep my air passage open! Great fun. Lol.

I've taken both Seroquel and Remeron before, and never had the conjestion from either of them. I'm soooo sorry that you had to go through that with three different meds. It makes it scary to try new medications, but you know we have to keep at it.....because there IS a combination out there that is good for your particular system. The heck of it is being a lab rat in trying to find it!

I tried Melatonin once, before ever seeing a doctor, and I thought I was going to have a stroke. It scared me so much. While laying in bed, all of a sudden one of my blood vessels just started pumping really fast and hard. I thought it was going to blow! But it only lasted a few minutes and didn't come back. But it scared me enough that I never tried Melatonin again. Lol. And I've also tried Valerian, Kava Kava, and probably other herbals that I can't remember right now....all to no avail. Expensive and disheartening.

I'm glad that you found something that helps with your sleep now. A good night's sleep is not a bad thing. *smile*

Take care and God bless,
Sandy

Hi there again, Phillipa.

Yup, it WAS horrible. But I really, really want to sleep. And I thought that with the new combination of meds that I'm on now, maybe I wouldn't have that same reaction. But now I'm getting scared of it again, and I don't think I'll be asking for the prescription afterall. I don't want to go through that again.

Thanks for all the support you provide on this Board. Everyone really apprecaites you, Phillipa!

God bless,
Sandy

Geez, 2 hours sleep a night! You have my sympathies.
I've spent extended periods getting by on 4, and that was bad enough.

Sandy, I doubt Valium would be much good for you.
Unlikely to induce sleep.

Declan,

Well, DANG. Maybe I should buy one of those anvils they were always using in the old Bugs Bunny shows. Cartoon anvils always seemed to knock the critters out good! LOL.

God bless,
Sandy
