T3 augmentation of Nardil - Has anyone tried this?

Posted by jedi on January 16, 2007, at 8:59:45

Hi guys,
I'm looking for an augmentation medication for my 90mg of Nardil and 1mg of clonazepam. There is some research supporting the use of T3(triiodothyronine) augmentation of SSRIs in treatment resistant depression(TRD). Has anyone used T3 with Nardil in non-hypothyroid TRD?

My main goals are to increase the therapeutic response of the Nardil and possibly be able to lower the dosage to lessen the weight gain, sexual side effects and motivation problems. Nardil is the only med that has worked for my atypical TRD. Every attempt to discontinue Nardil over the past 10 years(for other medication trials) has precipitated another bout of major depression.

My latest augmentation attempt was with Geodon. Initially it seemed to work really well. But as the med built up in my system I developed tremors and a really nasty internal anxious feeling that was close to the akathisia I had with Abilify.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jedi

Don't mess with a healthy thyroid as mine is shot. So that's one of the reasons meds don't work. But some docs use cytomel but don't know about MAOI'.Love Phillipa

I tried Cytomel while on Nardil. I don't have a truly fair assessment of it since my doc didn't start me on the lowest dose, and he didn't adjust my Synthroid down in relation to the T4 that is in (or results from?) Cytomel. So I found it truly awful as it made me very hyperthyroid. I had terrible headaches and insomnia. My labs were all out of whack when I finally went in to see him.

So I guess I'd recommend that you get complete thyroid labs drawn first so you have a baseline and a good idea where to start. And then plan with your doc for follow-up labs.

GG how long did it take to get your thyroid back in wack as mine is now hyperthyroid and they keep reducing the synthroid and not getting much better. Been going on for months now. And I'm seeing an endo. Horrible just horrible anxiety and insomnia. Love Phillipa

I would imagine it came back to normal within a month or so of stopping the Cytomel. If you're still hyperthyroid, why are you taking any Synthroid? Why aren't you stopping it until you get back to normal?

GG because that's what the endocrinologist said to do. And I get bloodwork every six weeks and then see either him or the Nurse Practioner. And with hasimotos they said it can change like that and become hypo again. All I know is it's one big pain in the you know what. Love Phillipa ps last change was skip on day a week.

Have you talked with them about any long-term options like having the thyroid destroyed with radioactive iodine?
