I've had this annoying problem for years. Sometimes it's better, sometimes not. For the most part though I never wake up feeling refreshed. I don't sleep long enough (not much on at 3 or 4 am either) or I don't sleep soundly. I have tried Seroquel in the past...even a half a pill of that knocked me out for over 24 hours. That kind of scared me so fast forward to now. I guess I'm getting older and the lack of sleep takes it's toll more than it did years ago.
I have recently added Abilify to my meds and I love the effects (and lack of bad effects) but I think it might make my sleep problems slightly worse...hard to tell. So far doc has tried Rozerem ... no help there at all, Restoril...again no help, tired as all get out but not sleeping, Ambien...good except I still wake up at 3 or 4. I have to wait one more week to get a script for Ambien CR as my prescription plan has a step program. I am hoping that will be my answer but...any input from sleeping aid users out there as to what the next thing I could try would be? I want something that will help keep me asleep but not leave me in a coma the next day.

My suggestion, which may be similar to having ambien cr, is to take half an ambien when you wake up at 3 or 4 am. I've done that when it happens. Seems to help.
If you wake up later, ie with fewer hours to go, you could try sonata. It has a very short half life and might get you back to sleep, without a hangover the next day
By the way, on the rozerem, did you take it right before going to sleep? Because I used it, and my pdoc had told me to take it longer than that prior to sleeping. But I happened to notice that it takes effect very quickly and also has a short half-life. After that, I took it only right before bed, and I thought it was actually helpful. Still needed ambien, but I have pretty persistent insomnia.

Ok. i have the answer for you. :) Lunesta. It is great. I take 3mg (the highest) and it works for me within 30 mins. and I sleep like a baby. The only bad side effect I have had is a bad taste in my mouth which just about everyone gets..but it is minor at least for me it is. I have had insomnia for several years and it was so bad that I would get up and drive in the middle of the night all over town because I couldnt sleep. Finally after taking benadryl over and over..I wanted something Rx strength and something you can use long term...Im allergic to Ambien so I tried Lunesta and it is GREAT. You have to make sure you get at least 8 hours otherwise you will feel pretty groggy in the morning...
Take Care.
