This is my sixth day on Lamictal. The last few days i have woke up early in the morning with extremely acid stomach, close to vomiting. I take a zantac and it resolves within an hour or so. Has someone else experienced this with Lamictal, will it go away? Also, will it be worse at higher doses?

Hi:
I, too have acid problem due to anti-depressant, Wellbutrin SR and Lithium. For this problem, a very first thing we need to do is that we have to watch acid-producing foods, spicy and particularly nightly snacks(if you love to munch).
In the past, I took two different rx'ed meds. to calm down acid-activity in my stomach. However, med. does not help much. Rather, I had a bad experience which made me irritable and manic(due to bipolar II). Then, I needed to stop those reputable and pricy meds. completely. Since then, I've stricly disciplined myself not to eat any acid and spicy, minus any nightly snacks when watching TV. So far, on this self-enforced eating-habit I've been getting a good result without any 'flare-ups.'

Yes, prilosec and Gaviscon--better than the other OTCs--a word of caution--check drug interactions as prilosec may slow down liver breakdown and lead to more in blood stream--you may have to make a very small adjustment in dose Good Luck
Eliminating snack 2 hrs + before bed is very important.

I've taken Zantac 150 recently, maybe due to a virus, maybe to anxiety and it does help for upset stomach due to acid reflux.
Any antacid or H2 blocker or the like should probably not be taken around (hour or two) the actual time that a particular psychiatric medication is taken unless one is sure there is no interaction as it may cut down the absorption rate of the medication.

This morning it was a bit better, maybe it's a side effect that will diminish over time. That's the only noticable s/e i have from Lamictal so far. I've decided to discontinue nortriptyline, the only thing it does now is producing s/e, including acid stomach. I think it's better to start out with remeron and Lamictal and see what that combo can do for me. I have a special relationship with remeron so it stays.

heippas
Good luck with the new combo....! Sorry to hear about the stomach acid :o( Not nice...sadly I have no cure....
My pdoc back in England suggested Remeron, but I was pretty much like 'no way!' I'm a chick and ultra scared of anything weight gain inducing....
My herbs are working well so far. Except I still have OCD/anxiety like behaviours....
I'm feeling pretty good right now - a combination of red wine and Bob Dylan! People don't drink enough wine around here.... its all beer, or spirits.
Anyway, I'm off for some 'mental health counselling' (whatever that might be) at my university's health centre (you know which one!) tomorrow, hopefully I'll get a referral to a pdoc, well, maybe not. I just need some good therapy with CBT. Pdocs - well they can only prescribe drugs really. What can they tell me that I don't already know???
Kind regards
Meri-Tuuli (I prefer Meri-Tuuli, not sure the direct translation into Svenska works!)

I always had acid stomach on many ADs. I'd strongly recommend prilosec, protonix, nexium (the most expensive--try others first), aciphex and prevacid. They worked much better than zantac, pepcid or tagamet for me, and there's evidence indicating they are stronger in general. No side-effects, either.
Just check the P450 enzyme effects for possible drug-interactions--but of course your doc should do that anyway. Docs used to worry about safety with them, but in the last couple of years the concerns have turned out to be false. They're a good alternative to zantac! And prilosec is over the counter.

I have also had this problem before but not to this extent, i have used pepcid, which i prefer before zantac. I happened to have zantac at home. I have not tried the ones you're recommending, but i will check how they are available, if i need a prescription. So thank you for the tips!

I have it too because of my nicotine treatment.
except from some puke-intentions (valid word? :-) ) i have little worries about it.
