XANAX is a MOOD brightner?

Posted by eve70 on August 1, 2006, at 11:17:08

Hi to all,
I've read in this board that someone reported, during the use of Xanax, an elevation in mood (more bright) more sociability and a sense of well being.
This is strange for a Benzo!
Are these normal effects of Xanax or are personal ractions to the drug?
Could anyone report similar effects in his personal experience?
What about side effects?
Thank you very much for your share!!!!
Eve.

Xanax has some antidepressant effects and also when your're anxiety is gone you feel good. So maybe that's why. Are you on xanax? Love Phillipa

Thank you Philippa!
No i'm not currently on xanax, but i was on it years ago without great effects (probably cause i'm not anxious).
However, i'm always looking for everything that could bright my mood.

I take 6mg of Alprazolam.

I experience, well i have expereinced euphoria at 3mg.
I started 6mg when i went off clonazepam which actually made me mad at high doses, mean i mean, cold.

Xanax isnt depressing itself, but if you are depressed you can still be depressed, so its kinda in the middle it doesnt make you depressed, but well lighty will lift mood, but after the first 30min it will depend on your mood.

Clonazepam is the DEPRESSING benzo of all, at high doses, .5 actually sometimes increased my mood. I got mad at high doses, thats why i got off it, i heard somewhere alprazolam is a antiaggression agent, but that was only from one source so dont know really what backup info it has.

Thats my put.

Matt

I have used xanax a few times, but only for a few weeks each time. I found that low doses had significant mood lifting effects. But that was along with prozac and zyprexa. I found out later that when I used it all by itself it did not have the same good effect. Somehow it seemed to work well in synergy with the other meds.

Back in its early days it was actually an antidepressant. There were clinical studies showing that in a dose range of 1.5mg to 3mg per day, something like 70% of people had a positive response. Tiredness and some mental slowing are the main side effects.

Yes Xanax when it first came out was touted as having antidepressant properties. I can find some abstracts on Pubmed which attest to this. I find that if I am mildly depressed it does help some. Nothing for major depression though.

I wouldn't jump to use a benzo to brighten your mood. There are so many other options. Xanax is addictive and hard to come off of.

Nope ... wouldn't go there.

Maxie I was on it for years at a dose of 2-3mg a day and had no problem getting off it. Just switched to valium. Love Jan

Hence why you had no problem getting off of it ... you switched to another benzo. Actually you used part of the "Ashton method" for getting off benzos. You slowly switch to valium and then you decrease the valium until you are off it. valium has the longest half life of all the benzos. So that's why you didn't feel the effect.

Maxie I know but I'll need one for life over 30yrs now. And we detoxed people on high doses of valium and cut it each day. You're too smart. Love Phillipa

Some people aren't deeply depressed but highly anxious and benzos are meds that can be taken for life. And all the pdocs I've ever had have no problem with them. Problems arise if you raise your dose without a Doc's orders. Isn't klonopin longer acting then valium? I'll have to check the equivalency charts. Love Phillipa
