Do many people find TCA's better then SS/NRI's?
And do some TCA's cause more weight gain then others.
Also do they cause extreme weight gain like Nardil or Mirtazapine?
I know it differs with everyone but Im talking in generall.Regards

There's quite a lot of variety with TCAs as a class.
More so than with SSRIs, I believe
Noradrenaline based TCAs like Desipramine can be quite stimulating and don't cause weight gain.
I took Clomipramine for a while, which I didn't particularly like.
It caused horrible weight gain, but then I wasn't very careful about what eight.
Was good for sleep and anxiety, did help depression a bit

I hated effexor, but found the TCA's very effective. Remeron is a different story altogether, it didn't really feel like either.

I'm just curious which TCAs you tried, which ones you liked, and why you stopped taking them?

I took doxepin, clomipramine, and amitrypaline. All were good antidepressants.
I stopped cause I got scared about the cardiac and other potential side effects.
Thats the way I am, I can find something that works great, but I feel the compulsion to read about and research the drug, then I don't like what I find. If I don't research it, I feel paranoid about the unknown possabilities.
Then I stop the drug, since I won't stop thinking about it till I stop the drug.
thats my cycle.

Don't let that stop you, they are probably safer than my mind lets me think. They are effective drugs.

yes, i do (did, see below). only sinequan (doxepin, asendin) ever gave me a robust full remission, sustained for yrs. w/no increase in dosage.
the GI SEs of nausea and constipation, back then, in my late 20's (now in 50's) were something i could easily endure, until it worked at exactly 3 wks.
however, since my mis-dx of bipolar for 9 yrs. in 1990, all the mood stabilizers i never needed in 1st place, caused me to acquire very bad reflux/ gerd, requiring proton pump inhibitors (prilosec, then prevacid, finally at highest dose).
now, 16 ys after that mis-dx, i'm stuck on the ppis (common), & the sinequan constipation now increases the reflux, as well. i've tried sinequan 3 times in these recent yrs., & can't overcome.
if you've either iron guts or aren't prone to GI probs, you'd manage fine.
someone - linkage? - correct if wrong - tcas aren't useful for those with atypical depression (over-eating & sleeping, etc.)
tcas cause weight gain for most, but for me much less than remeron. i needed gain, so sinequan was good. gain stopped & never increased when i reached a healthy weight (still slim). intitial cravings for sweets, but this stopped early, never to return.
nortiptyline & desipramine least gainers, but desip. is less balanced w/mostly just norepinephrine affected.

Yeah, different TCA's can be effective for different forms of depression.
