EMSAM - Stopping after 5 weeks - what to expect

Posted by katie san diego on June 10, 2006, at 9:45:03

I've never been on an MAOI before, and am now stopping the patch. i have to wait a week before starting the prozac. how long does it take for the insomnia to to away? will i feel any withdrawal effects? Will stopping abruptly intensify the depression?

i hate these 15 minute managed care appointments. it seems i never remember to ask the right questions, and my doc never talks about side effects.

Well at least the drug gets out of your system fast which is one of the reasons I like the idea of a patch. You can take it of and phychologically you feel better. Love Phillipa

It sounds like it SHOULD work that way-rip it off and it's out of your system, but it doesn't work that way, it's still an irreversible MAO inhibitor, it's bound to take a while before your system's back to normal. Cecilia

Katie, just wondering, did your doc suggest a higher dosage? Have you tried SSRI's before?

wam regards, Jake

i was on the higher 9mg dose for about 10 days with no change. i was sick and miserable after more than 5 weeks, and sure nothing would change.

after my first depressive episode - 13 years ago, i was put on prozac and responded wonderfully. i stayed on it for about 8 years.. gradually increasing the dosages over the years. i get SAD, and then one winter, the drugged must have pooped out.. and i just crashed. thats when ever med in the world got tried... ECT.. everything... finally it was lexapro that brought me round.

unfortunately the next winter - same crash. more experiments with more drugs. nothing seemed to work except ironically the lexapro again.SSRIs seem to be the only thing i respond to, so i begged my doctor to try the prozac again.

I actually moved to san diego over a year ago to avoid the east coast winters thinking that would help.

i just cant stand all the side effects of everything else out there.

wish me luck. i am running out of choices.

Good luck with that Katie. Sometimes ssri's kick back in after you have been off for a while. Who know's maybe there's a regimen to go back and forth between selegiline and other drugs, since it's supposed to be nueroprotective.

warm regards, Jake.

you know, my brother was a hard case chronic depressive. probably started in early childhood, and yet when he was about 30, he quit all drugs. couldnt take the side effects anymore. he just rides his bike like a maniac and focuses on getting those endorphons pumping. who knows. maybe i just need to start working out and keep those endorphins high during the low months.
