Facial muscle spasm

Posted by Klavot on April 29, 2006, at 16:30:35

I'm currently taking 50 mg / day Zoloft and 150 mg / day Wellbutrin. My facial muscles feel as though they are in a spasm.

hey! This may be EPS--extra-pyramidal symptoms. EPS is an umbrella term for a whole lot of problems like muscle stiffness and contractions ("dystonia"), involuntary movements, etc. They were first noticed with the neuroleptics, like Thorazine. However, antidepressants, including SSRIs, seem to cause them in some people also--there have even been reports of SSRIs being linked to a few cases of TD (tardive dyskinesia, a usually permanent movement disorder).

BUt..it could be something else entirely. Call your doc ASAP.

I don't have any involuntary movements, but I do have a sense of physical restlessness - I feel "fidgety". Might this be a subtle form of akathisia instead? I have a doctor friend who treats everything I say with scepticism, as in "nah - that's impossible, you can only get akathisia from anti-psychotics".
Thing is, Zoloft and Wellbutrin have helped me so much, I do not want to quit them.
