Alternating augment strategy

Posted by Ron non on March 28, 2006, at 13:11:24

Some drugs work well temporarily, or initially when augmenting the SSRI’s for depression, but then they fizzle out or develop tolerance. I was wondering about trying or having available enough augmenters I could switch around and only take the same one every third or forth day.

I have a couple that do this for me and wondered if anyone could give me some other possibilities. I find that Neurontin has a strong calming or smoothing effect when used intermittently. Similarly Adderall in real low doses (5mg or less for me) has a nice dopaminergic spark when only taken a couple times a week. The same goes for the Benzos.

What others might be nominated? Maybe the ones that work pretty fast when they do work, and could therefore fit into a rotating strategy. Thanks, Ron-non.

Well I just had the recent experience of switching from Prozac+Seroquel to Prozac+Zyprexa with no time off in between. I can say that the Zyprexa combo is just as effective but I did sink into a depression for a few days immediately after switching.

I don't know what taking the same drug every third or fourth day would do. Try it and let us know. Maybe you are on to something.

10mg of Zyprexa really helps me and gives me 7 days of feeling motivated and optimistic again.

I suggest if you try taking Zyprexa now and again, try 10mg. But then we're all different so maybe you would need a lower dose.

I haven’t done much with those atypical APs (anti-psychotics). I will have to read the message boards more to decide if Zypexa or Risperdal really help aleviate depression (unipolar).

I do use Seroquel for sleep sometimes (less than a quarter of a 25 mg tablet turns the lights out upstairs). If I miscalculate the smidgen of Seroquel and take alittle too much I’m out of it and struggling to perk up for a couple hours after waking.

I once tried Geodon – it made me super charged- confident, outgoing – I couldn’t wait for the next person to enter my space to interact with them, and etc. I guess it just made me feel all positive and manic. Then in a few weeks it all dissipated. When I tried it once later I was still feeling weird reactions to it a couple days later. Part of it kicks in on day one and other parts kick in after that. For that reason I hesitate to use something that strong and weird for an alterating augment. However maybe alittle bit of Risperdal or Zypreza might be worth trying. Thanks Ron
