I've been taking Ativan for over 20 years..my current dose is 6-8 mgs. a day. The problem is I don't think it's helping much anymore. My pdoc basically told me if you build resistance to one benzo, you will probably be resistant to all of them. So my question is, is switching to Klonopin just a waste of time or is there a chance that it will be effective for me.(I do have social anxiety disorder). Thanks in advance to any advice.

That's a good question as my old pdoc said that a benzo is a benzo. But they all work differently for me. I've been taking them longer than you have. I started with valium then ativan, then, xanax, then combo of xanax and klonopin, then mono of klonopin which depressed me so I switched back last year to valium which seems to work in the original dose from years ago. Anyone else have the real answer? Fondly, Phillipa

Hi Tyler,
i think it would be worth a try. i took Ativan for a few months for severe PTSD sx, i was in trouble because i developed a tolerance so fast. Then i was always running out.
My psychDr switched me to diazapam after trying Klonopin first. It works well because it's longer-acting. Klonopin is longer-acting also. i didn't like it because it interfered with switching when i needed to. i think it would work because it's longer-acting than Ativan. You wouldn't need to take it as often.take care,

I've been on klonopin for 12 years for SP. 2mgs at night. I've tried other benzo's before, but for me, klonopin was the one that really tackled the SP. I've never had to up the dose, actually have come down from 3mgs. I'd give it a try. All these meds work differently on everyone, but from my own experience and what I've read is If SP is your primary issue, klonopin would be a go to benzo to try. Good luck.
