I take 15 mg. Abilify, .5 mg Klonopin, 15 mg. Celexa, and 1000 mg Depakote. I had a terrible stuffy cold, and had not taken any cold medications in the last 10 years! I thought I would take some Thera-flu, and I started to go completely restless, anxious, and started having VERY delusional thoughts...as if I were in severe danger. My diagnosis is Bipolar / Schizoaffective. Has anyone had this experience, or any help explaining it?

Yes, years ago, before I had a diagnosis or was on meds, thera-flu made me really sick and freaked out, so I know what you're talking about and you have my sympathy. I'm talking from memory now I haven't researched it lately, but I think there is an ingredient in there (starts with letter c) that doesn't really help with anything but is in some cough medicines and is used as an abuse drug by some kids.
I've never touched thera-flu again. If anybody knowledgable out there knows what I'm talking about or if I'm confusing two different ingredients, I'd love to hear from you.
thanks, James K

I've been looking around the net, and I found that theraflu can increase the effects of many psych meds. I also found a pro drug abuse site where people discuss using dextromorpe... something (I already closed the page and forget the spelling) to get high. That seems to be an ingredient in theraflu. Check the box. Sorry I can't find a good link, I'm new to net research.

Thera flu has never bothered me but I think it has an antihistamine in it. I know some people really wig out in antihistamines.
My aunt took Benadryl once and had to call 911 in the middle of Wal-mart- she had a horrific panic attack and felt really bizarre.
I freak out like that out on phergen and compazine. I feel very restless, and very, very weird in my head. I hate it.

people abuse coricidin for the dextromethorphan(cough suppressant), which evidently at high doses acts as a psychedelic so people "trip" on it.......but seems there's a lot of deaths from it, and scary behavior reported
geez.....why the crazy risk? just to get high?

I hate it.Both Phenergan and Compazine are phenothiazine (among the oldest) antipsychotics. Phenergan has a use as a very powerful and unclean drug as an antihistamine although I dont (I hope) think it is used much any more. Compazine is still used in hospitals for people who come in with uncontrollable vomiting (I know, I had the experience in college -- I had to have benadryl to stop the reaction and it wore off after I left the hospital and I spent several hours agonizing on the sofa. I could barely think on the taxi ride home). The "restless" feeling you felt was a form of EPS, akathisia. There exist now more modern antinausea agents that target 5HT3 such as Ondansetron and Granisetron.
