Hi,
My PDoc had tried to put me on Remeral (mertazapine) and I was so sensitive to it, that even a 1/4 pill of the lowest dose would make me so drowsy, I couldnt even drive so he said stop taking it.
He put in an order at the pharmacy for Effexor 37.5mg. He said there are some side effects. I was wondering if anyone who has been on this had any sexual side effect problems (erection, impotence, libido, etc)....(male sexual side)
Thanks!

Yes it can. It is dose dependant. Some people don't get that side effect untill higher doses.
There are a few remedies that work for some.

Hi,
Could you be more specific as to what remedies are around to not make impotence a large issue when taking Effexor please?
Any info much appreciated.

Keeping the lowest effective dose is your first step.
After this, there are some other pharmacudicals that can be used to counteract this side effect.
Wellbutrin is the first that comes to mind. It is a non serotonergic antidepressant that is sometimes combined with other AD's to reduce sexual side effects.
Impotence drugs like viagra can also be usefull.
There is a drug called periactin, which can be usefull. I don't know the status on this drug, but it is available online without a prescription (legally, I believe). It may be a prescription in the U.S. I don't know.
Some people get help with herbs. Ginkgo has been studied for its ability to reduce antidepressant induced anorgazmia. Others use yohimbine sucessfully.
Caffiene can be helpfull for some.

Linkage,
You seem to be very knowledgable. I was wondering if you could answer a question for me.
I am currently on Wellbutrin XL 300mg in the morning. I am also on Klonopin 0.5mg (about 1-2mg per day for anxiety). On this regimine, I currently have some impotence symptoms.
My Pdoc prescribed me 37.5 Effexor which I will start on Saturday.
That being said, I also have the following (stress, anxiety, depression). Would it be safe to say that these three psychological symptoms are creating an impotence problem for me?
I have been to my primary doc and he did blood work and my testosterone numbers were fine. I went to the urologist and he asked me when I am on either viagra or cialis, can I obtain a full erection, I said yes. I have been having more stress, anxiety issues lately and last night while on cialis I was told by my partner that I was not fully erect. Would you say this is because of these three symptoms, putting aside the meds I am on?
Thank you again,

Effexor can cause impotence, most SSRI's and SNRI's do. The impotence goes away with time - at least in some cases. If you are having problems without it, it may be safe to assume your problems (impotence) will probably get worse with it.
It depends how old you are - people like me (in my early 50's) tend to get erection problmes from age (I'm not sure if I'm lucky or not as I don't have those problems). Also it depends what other drugs you are taking. Certain drugs like statins (cholesterol) drugs tend to reduce libido, etc.

This is only my experience, but Wellbutrin had no negative impact on my erectile functioning at all, while Klonopin did - very much so. Even on a very small amount of Klonopin, I became totally impotent.

I would definately agree. I would say that one of the biggest causes of sexual dysfunction would be anxiety. It is quite simple. When the brain precieves significant anxiety, it tends puts sexual matters on hold.
Wellbutrin is an effective antidepressant, however many people find that it does not have a very strong effect on anxiety. For many people, wellbutrin can make anxiety worse, since it does have properties of a stimulant.
If you are still experiencing significant anxiety on Wellbutrin alone, your doctor is right in trying another agent.
See how the effexor helps the anxiety. Lowering the wellbutrin may help the anxiety too.
I would say, make anxiety reduction your first priority. The rest may follow.
