I am going to my GP doc tomorrow and want to ask him for a sleep medicine that will help me without side effects or addiction. The last time I took over the counter stuff (years ago) it make my ears ring.
I have been taking over the counter Melatonin, but it doesn't seem to work as well now. I am stressed out and have trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep. ANy advice?

Happyflower how about ambien or lunesta? Lunesta isn't supposed to be addictive. Fondly, Phillipa

Lunesta would be a good option. It induces quick sleep and keeps you asleep and then wears off quickly after waking. A side effect of a bad taste in the mouth or sinuses usually goes away in a few days. It doesn't seem to poop out so much like ambien, and it lasts longer than ambien, and it is approved for longterm use.
Super low dose doxepin or elavil could be good. They are tricyclic antidepressants. They have harsh side effects. But, when taken in ultra low doses they have sleep promoting effects, improve sleep architecture, and have minimal side effects. By ultra low dose, I mean taking a 10mg tab and breaking it up into just 1mg to 5mg pieces. Some doctors use these ultra low doses to calm the brain as well, instead of using benzos like klonopin.
I've used xanax at times for sleep also. It works good. But it does have some carryover into the next day of feeling a little bit dumb.

I have hard core insomnia and 30 mg of Restoril just put me in a light, trance-like sleep. However other people get good results from it, My sleep Dr. prescribes it a lot.
warm regards ~Jake

I believe it is a hypnotic. 30mg is the usual dose. It is much stronger than a benzo and definitely stronger than say ambien or lunesta. Good luck I hear it works well. fondly, Phillipa

It worked great, feel asleep in about 45 min, and I woke up a couple of times, but feel right back asleep. It is amazing how some sleep can really inprove your mood. Thanks !

Restoril is a benzo so it cannot be stronger than a benzo.

Benzodiazepines are a class of meds with are used as tranquilizers and hypnotics; also some have antiseziure and antimanic uses. Benzos include Valium, Xanax, and Atavin.

Hi Happyflower
Temazepam (Restoril) is generally a pleasant sleep aid. Dependence may occur if it's used long-term ie. withdrawal symptoms can be a problem when it's stopped. If possible, temazepam is best taken for a short period of time only.
Kind regards
Ed

Thanks! My doc said that it is short term too. He didn't think I would be addicted, since I don't have the personality. Yeah, right, didn't he know I was a musican? LOL
