What Do You Feel Like On A Dopamine Agonist?

Posted by TomG on October 30, 2005, at 17:07:42

I did so well on just 20mgs of Geodon for two months and it seemed to poop out on me. Raising the dose didn't help. I had this profound clearing of the mind and also it had a very profound calming effect on my thoughts.

I attribute my response to Geodon being a potent 5HT2A antagonist which increases dopamine release in the cortex.

My main symptoms are anergia, flat emotions, loss of focus, social withdrawal, apathy, anhedonia, and insomnia. My doctor thinks I have a form of schizophrenia know as simple schizophrenia where I have all the negative symptoms and none of the positive like delusions and voices etc.

My question is for people who have taken dopamine agonists off-label for psychiatric symptoms. How did you feel on the drug you were taking? What symptoms did they seem to clear up for you?

Thanks,
Tom

wow. do a lot of doctors follow that philosophy? seems like there are a lot of innovative minded pdocs everywhere but canada.

my dopamine agonist experience was that it made me hypersomnelent, and even less motivated, and i think it exacerbated my nighttime nausea i was having.

it seems it can overstimulate dopamine autoreceptors when there's an abundance of them. i'm guessing that was my case. maybe 5mg instead of 1.5mg of mirapex would have worked, but the way my doctor liked to increase the dose by only 0.25 a week, i really wasn't too keen on waiting to find out.

Pick yourself up some feverfew. It binds fairly potently to the 5-ht2a receptors, and I noticed it had some significant mood elevating properties.

Completely substituted for risperdal when I was taking it minus any akathesia. It is used for migrane, but I've been promoting it around here for other uses.

Hi Tom.

It sounds like you are suffering from a bipolar depression that manifests as the "deficit syndrome". The deficit syndrome, a cluster of negative symptoms, can exist outside the realm of schizophrenia.

Have you tried treating as if you were bipolar? Dopaminergic hypofunction would certainly apply.

I didn't care for the Requip I tried a year ago. I got a lot of nausea and sleepiness on it. Right now though, I'm taking Cabergoline and it seems to help my depression somewhat. The effects are mild but it does help my motivation to some extent.

Sorry to interrupt, but I'd like to redirect follow-ups regarding feverfew to Psycho-Babble Alternative. Here's a link:

Deprenyl 1mg, l-dopa 130mg (with or without cabergoline) fills my mood out, feels more stable and generally pleasant, and doesn't make me tired. I'm less clear on the effect it has on my sleep pattern.
