Hi eveyone! hope you are all enjoying your weekend to some degree. i have an appointment with my new pdoc on monday, and because i have alcoholism, i was thinking of trying reviva to help fight cravings. i am fine for 5-6 month's, but then my alcoholism/craving/weakness what have you creeps up and i sometimes binge for a few days. this has become quite distressing lately, because lately it is harder to recover, and my meds are affected.
i read that reviva also has some potential in treating ocd. does anyone know anything about this? i have moderate ocd also and was hoping this drug could be a double blessing for me, or others with similiar problems! any feedback would be so welcome, thanks...john

For me all it did was block the effects of certain things where they didn't effect me. Unfortunatly, it just made me stubborn and increase my alcohol consumption!
I was taking it while on Prozac and noticed zero added antidepressant effects.

Hi John,I took Revia for a while to help with narcotics cravings. I didn't notice that my cravings were less but it certainly kept me from using narcotics while I was on it. The thing is, it blocks the euphoria you get from narcotics, so once you've taken the Revia, there's no point in trying to get high for at least 3-4 days. I don't know if it works like that for alcohol. My husband was also once prescribed Revia for alcohol cravings. I don't know how much it helped but he did stop drinking.
The only side effect I experienced from it was nausea. I was taking 50mg day. It was the same sort of nausea caused by opiates.
Hope this helps a little.

Hi.
I'm not sure about using Revia for OCD, but it is an interesting idea.
Have you tried Campral to reduce alcohol cravings?

I had a friend that said Campral worked pretty good for them, the only problem was that they weren't ready to stop.
The medication can only do so much, most of it is up to you to want to stop.
When I quit drinking about 2 1/2 years ago, I was on Paxil and I think that really helped with my obssessions at the time, but it was the one to two AA meetings a day that kept me from going to the bars.

Thanks Theo!
I agree totally, the individual must really want to stop drinking first and foremost, medication has it's limits.
i am really dedicated to stopping this time around. i go to a dual disoreder meeting in my area, and i should make more a.a. meetings.congrats on 2 and a half years sober, that is truly an accomplisment in my eyes. the longest i've gone is a year. i think prozac does help me stay sober longer by helping my ocd. i will still ask my doctor about campril and revia just to see what he thinks. my therapist said he has worked with many alcoholics in the past, that is why she suggested him.
thanks so much for taking the time to address my concerns!! have a great weekend...john

I'm just starting Campral today, and getting assessed for an intensive outpatient treatment programme tomorrow afternoon as I haven't been able to maintain my sobriety for any length of time. I am bipolar2 and have GAD and panic attacks in addition to being an alcoholic.
How did your appointment with your p-doc go?

The Campral has relieved my stress and agitation and left completely without any desire for a drink. To say I'm surprised and utterly thankful is this year's understatement. 25 years' worth of preoccupation has vanished and this is just day 3 of my treatment. I'm also in intensive outpatient treatment.
I am all smiles :-)
