Prozac causes mild euphoria for 45min

Posted by rjlockhart98 on August 11, 2005, at 10:22:32

I am on Prozac 20mg daily in the mornings.

I have noticed that for a period it causes mild euphoria when it is coming on. I have heard that it is stimulanting.

Has anyone experienced this.

It goes away after that.

Prozac used to give me quite strong euphoria and increased psychosis for days after taking one dose. I still cant beleive I took it for quite some months I was totally off my rocker on the stuff (but not depressed lol). In a kinda of evil self destructive kinda way I would like to go back on it just to feel that way again.

Hi Ed!

> How do you find the other SSRIs?

The only other one I tried was citalopram, that one made me really tired not elated but was even worse for worsening my psychosis. Pretty soon after I started it I became convinced I had been infested by tiny fish which were reproducing in my eyes. I said this to the GP and he put me back on prozac!

Hi Buns :-)

I definately think you should stick to the serotonin antagonists like Zispin - no more SSRIs for bunny!

Hi again Buns,

I was thinking.... what would you do if pericyazine was discontinued? It's rarely prescribed so I think there is a risk that it might be - most docs probably haven't even heard of it!

Have you ever tried levomepromazine/methotrimeprazine (Nozinan) - it's supposed to be quite similar to pericyazine (Neulactil). Promazine is also fairly similar.

I would ask for thioridazine again, I am quite tempted to anyways. Pericyazine seems alot more sedating than thioridazine but with less antianxiety effect. To get any useful positive effect from the pericyazine I need to take at least 30mg but that wipes me out too much and mkes me feel kinda urgh. Nauseous maybe, its hard to describe, certainly not too well. So instead I take 10 or 20 with minimal benefit. I was hoping pericyazine would be very like thioridazine but without the hassle of making the gp nervous cos its use is restricted but it doesnt appear to be.

Hi Buns!

Thioridazine (Melleril, Mellaril) was one of the most widely prescribed drugs in the UK before it's use was restricted!

Melleril has been discontinued in the UK but thioridazine is still available as a generic. Having said that, we've (still) got a box of Melleril 25mg in the pharmacy, perhaps I should keep it to one side for you!

Has generic thioridazine been discontinued in the UK? I'm not sure. I'll try to find out.

Hi Dec,

It sometimes causes cardiac arrhythmias..... but then so does haloperidol, chlorpromazine etc.

I have always gotten that rush of euphoria with Prozac, too. I don't think mine ever lasts as long as 45 minutes, though.

Kind of a interesting sensation, huh?
