i know during the 70's and early diazpeam was among the most prescribed for anxiety, and depression!
is diazpeam just a plain benzo like lorazpeam?
as in just 'general sedation' not like Clonazepam's potent mental calming, but its BAD side effects in causing depression. And Alprazolam
Has anyone here ever taken Valium?
is it similar to Ativan, i am very familiar to Ativan becuase i was on high doses for a while.
Thanks

Matt, I take valium. Take l5mg a day. Yes it's like ativan but it has a long half-life. They use it a lot to detox off of alchohol, and shortacting benzos like xanax.Fondly, Phillipa

Hi,
Yes, I've taken diazepam (Valium). It's the most popular benzo in the UK! .......along with nitrazepam and temazepam.

Diazepam is the gold standard, isn't it? Not neccessarily the best and certainly nowhere near the worst. The money's gone somewhere else now. I started taking it in 1972. It's OK, now I take 5 or 7.5mgs/d.

Hi Declan,
>Diazepam is the gold standard, isn't it?
Only in Australia and the UK. US pdocs seem to have a phobia of it.

Well Clonazepam has certainly taken over in the southern part of Ameraica, my doctor was licenced in 1952! but he still looks in his 60's. Still metnally going.
He knows about everything pre-1950. But i think he has forgotten those days, only keeps up with the current, doesnt like to awnser old medication questions, But prescibes everything CLONAZEPAM! Or anything NEW that comes on the market like Symbyax...which i started. I feel 'froze on it' , Personally so he can get some rep from the pharma. companies and get little tamplets.
He said Valium is addicting, and mentioned it with older benzo's, i dont want go back there....
I never intrude, i just say ok what do you think we should do?

Be assertive. Let him know you know that ativan, klonopin, and all the benzos are addicting. And let him know that valium is usually used to detox someone from the other benzos expecially xanax. Fondly, Phillipa

-I have taken Clonaxepam 4-6mg daily for 2 depressed, saliva dribbling, (EEK) years.
-Xanax for 2-3 months of up and down states of action, (althought its a FANTASTIC acute psychic reliever, and uplift). I DO NOT believe it should be used long term UNLESS the anxiety is VERY sever and only responds to this. It has a higher % of people unable to quit, trouble decreasing dosage, then other benzos-i speak from experience, and lots of research, from personal testomonials of the hell of missing even 1 days use-like the American Express card-don't leave home without it. Seizures can result from only 2 days without, in dependant folks on higher doses. It is however the ONLY medication that works in some svere anxiety and panic cases.
-Valium, I currently take, have taken thousands of 2, 5, 10mg pills over the years, and find it the most innocuous, benign, benzo. I can skip days easily or take it once daily. I find little difference between 5mg or 40mg in effects now-except if i drink (no no-i know).
Valium has been SO demonised over the years and often seen as 'old hand'. it works great for sedation, psychic tension quelling, when first started, but soons stop being "felt" IME, like Phillipa, this is my current maintaince benzo.

Cheers

Sorrry i meant YMMV-Your millage may vary-yes
Valium stoped being Yummy for me a long time ago-I remember being pleasantly euphoric on 3 2mg pills a few years ago! my Gaba receptors have been blunted for too long by the 20x stronger binding capacity of 4-6mg day Clonazepam-2 years on-MISTAKE
.5mg Clonazepam (Orange)=10mg Valium (Blue) according to many benzo equivenency tables
6mg Clonazepam=120mg Valium!!
And yes Clonazepam made me dribble!!-excess salivation-a listed SE, and make me depressed-althought i didn't know it-you never do? do you?
A psychiatrist mentioned to me that the doses i took were what a psychotic inpatient or Eplipetic would take, then put me on 40mgs Valium a day. I now am scripted 20mg althought i can skip days and often do, and had a stash of over 400 5mg tabs a while ago. GOLLY
I do not "feel" Valium at all now.
Cheers-hehe

Paulwell now you've scared me. I don't feel emotion anymore either. If something happens that would have made me shake or my heart pound in the past it doesn't now. I better try and cut down on the valium. Do you think it will help? I want to feel again. Anger, anxity, fear. Fondly, Phillipa

Hi ya Phillipa,
I still feel emotions, what i meant was that i dont 'feel' the valium working in any discernable scence-just back ground "being there" i guess

you guys need to try Ativan. Its not really i would say addictive, because it doesnt produce a sense of wellbeing. It just decreases alertness and eases sometension if there is.
Also i worked with NO imparment with 1mg.

i was!
but it didnt effect any phobic symptoms, i mean 6mg is the highest dose, i hardly felt anything. but i was going through severe nuerosis then. I took 2mg Tablets three times daily. Usally first around 8-9. next usally 1. Last around 5-6 at night. It didnt do anything. Exept release some abdomn. tension, and decreased alertness.
But somepeople nerves are diffrent, and i thought it would be a good med for general tension.
Not Xanax.
Cheers, and stay on your ritilin for now

My pdoc is pretty wonderful in understanding that some benzos work better in different situations. So I have in my cabinet, or access at anytime, to any of them. Here are my ratings:
Lorazepam: 8 nice, mellow but doesn't fog the mind:
Valium: 8 good for floppy muscle feeling, sleeping, muscle spasms. I like Valium!
Xanax: 8 If only I could afford the XR version (3 times as expensive). Quick to act, nice and mellow, but makes me tired and wears off quickly.
Temazepam: Good for sleep but mildly depressing afterwards
Klonopin: This one can go many ways. Sometimes I feel nothing, sometimes it's just what I need, sometimes it depresses me.
One they don't make anymore, but was my favorite was Librium. Good old Librium.
Of course, if I had my druthers I'd chuck the lot and just take opiates. I don't get addicted to any of them so what the heck, opiates make me feel better quicker than anything.

Librium is still made :-) It's also available as generic chlordiazepoxide.
