I remember reading that Cymbalta/duloxetine is supposed to help allevate pain. Does anyone know the mechanism behind this? Do you know how Cymbalta helps pain? Do those of you who've been taking Cymbalta feel that it helps relieve joint pain, arthritis, etc?

Antidepressants that affect the noradrenergic uptake mechanism seem to simultainiously affect opiate systems.
As a result, noradrenic antidepressants also seem to help certain pain.

All I know is that i took cymbalta 60mg when it first came out 30mg for a month then 60mg. I didn't think it did a thing so I weaned off it. I had no joint pain while I was on it but when I stopped my joints began to pain. My back aches really bad and all my bones seem to crack when i move. Fondly, Phillipa

Phillipa,
Are you saying that you are worse after tying Cymbalta and stopping it than you were before you ever took it? If so, do you attribute that to the Cymbalta or something else?

Yes I am worse in regards to pain after stopping the cymbalta. It was pointed out to me by my oldl pdoc that it was helpful for peripheral neuropathy. I don't know if the pain is because my osteoarthritis is worse or what. Fondly, Phillipa

Just anecdotal, but it did help with my arthritis pain.
Unfortunately, the pain relief hasn't been all that long lasting, although I know I'm hurting less than I would be without it. It's a subtle thing, but it's real.
I also take Chondroitin Sulfate and Glucosamine HCI, because even though the studies haven't (yet) proven it helpful for humans, the animal studies and what I've seen it do in animals convinces me that it does help....
Great, maybe I should get my meds from a vet?

I took Cymbalta late last year for a couple of months for depression. I have always been particularly susceptible to getting headaches, especially from even light alcohol drinking. While on Cymbalta I did notice that I had absolutely no headaches whatsoever. So I do believe there is a strong anti-pain component to the med.

I've been taking glucosamine and chondrotin for a while and it does nothing for my arthritis. When I roll my shoulders for instance they crunch. And my back crunches when I turn in bed. I'm not that old. The physical therapist at the gym says the noise is called crepitous. Signs of arthritis. I'm afraid to go to a doctor. Afraid of what he'll say and meds he might want me to take. Anyone else have this crunching? Fondly, Phillipa

Effexor has also been used for these purposes. I noticed that although I did not suffer pain before going on I noticed I was very extrordinaritly pain sensitive when coming off of it.

Yes, in my case it's bursitis in my shoulders (right under the shoulder blades is where it hurts/pops). I'm not that old either (40) :( Cymbalta really helped with the pain, if I could have stayed awake more than a few hours a day I'd still be taking it. You should go to a doctor, you can always ignore their advice, that's what I do.
