All meds just Uppers or Downers?

Posted by smith562 on July 6, 2005, at 18:15:56

Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to know what people think about notion that all psych meds are simply just uppers or downer. Some people argue that we haven't progress at all over the past 150 years back when patients use cocaine, opium and alcohol. I have tried many meds and possible agree that todays meds are no different that the past ....

cocaine "upper"=amphetamines, tricyclics, wellbutrin, to some extent SSRIs

Opium and alcohol "downer"=depakote, lithium, benzos, antipsychotics

Is there a difference?

Thanks,

Smith

I know it is a pretty broad statement, but I would fully agree.

My friend was a big drugee, he did a *lot* of speed, meth, coke, etc. One day I found out he stole some of my effexor.

He replied with "man, if I had found this sooner, I wouldn't have had to do all this coke"

this could, of course be taken many different ways.

I agree with Link except about the effexor. It made me tired. Fondly, Phillipa

I think a lot of street drugs could be used as actuall medications to treat illinesses. These new drugs are different, though. Like comparing alcohol and a benzo is bs imho. benzo's are pretty slective, alcohol is a poison and has may different properties. I think most new drugs are made by selecting certain mechanisms of the older drugs.

Tricyclics and SSRIs made me tired, Lithium just made me sick, but I'm not bi-polar.

You could make that argument, but it's sort of like saying that all colors are either bright or drab. It's a very simple way of classifying drugs, but it doesn't have a lot of explanatory value.

I know Shawn is coming at it from a different prespective, but the days during which I thought that these drugs were doing something novel, and beneficial for my brain are long gone.

Whenever they test these drugs on animals, they only do two week tests. They never keep an animal on prozac for a year to observe the fact that any acute changes had long since been compensated for, and that the animal is more or less the same.

When the drugs came out, doctors really wanted them to be different from street drugs, but only time can make that distinction.

I agree 100%. I even tell my doctor which drugs these seem like. Zyprexa is like pot with out the memory problems, wellbutrin is like coke or some thing. The wellbutrin pamplet even says that wellbutrin is amphetamine like. Yes we are taking the new class of medication the legal ones nowadays maybe not in the future.

I totally agree with you sebastien. Zyprexa and pot are almost identical for me too.

I've only done pot once and I said to myself this is zyprexa.

That feeling like you're not going anywhere in life, but that you don't really need to go anywhere in life either :)

These psych drugs are sounding better and better. Maybe I should have tried Zyprexa and Effexor instead of Parnate.

I suppose within reason. Zyprexa was not as pleasurable as pot for me. But it seemed to create that same thought-glue type stability.
