What's the washout period for Prozac?????

Posted by Maxime on June 14, 2005, at 16:52:48

Hi

I am thinking of switching to Prozac from Parnate. Prozac is the only other med that has worked for me.
But if it doesn't work, I will go back to Parnate because at least I am getting a partial response.

QUESTION: Since the half life of Prozac is 5 weeks, can I still go by the standard of 2 weeks before restarting the Parnate? I don't think I could go 5 weeks with no AD. Not without safety issues.

Thanks.

Maxime

Hi Maxi!

You can start Prozac 2 weeks after stopping Parnate- some say that less is sufficient. If you take Prozac but decide that you want to return to Parnate, you'll have to wait 5 weeks before restarting.

What have you tried adding to the Parnate?

Hi Scott. I haven't added anything except the Dexedrine which I only take because of the afternoon fatigue. Why, do you have some suggestions?

Yes, YOU keep telling me how well I am doing. You said I must be feeling better because I went hiking etc. And I keep saying that not all is well. I have had some good days, yes, but also days filled with thoughts of suicide. But it could be Dexedrine.
I am up and down and all over the place. That's the truth. Believe me.

I'm sorry to sound so harsh, but .... never mind.

That depends. What other drugs have you had positive experiences with?

nortriptyline
desipramine
lithium
Trileptal
valproate
Lamictal
Abilify
Zyprexa
thyroid
Wellbutrin

Almost anything except SSRI, Effexor, Cymbalta, and Anafranil

Maxie, I'm sorry if I make you angry and upset. But I keep hoping that this time things will be different. I guess I'm just trying to be optomistic like I am about my luvox. Fondly, Phillipa

Hey Scott I will make a note next to each one:

> nortriptyline - rash
> desipramine - started to lactate at 75mg
> lithium - Toxic on all doses
> Trileptal - I take 450 mg right now
> valproate - Rash, allergic
> Lamictal - Made me more depressed
> Abilify - Not available in Canada
> Zyprexa - Can not handle with eating disorder
> thyroid - I take synthroid for hypothyroidism. Endo refuses to give me cytomel.
> Wellbutrin - Makes me go psychotic
>
> Almost anything except SSRI, Effexor, Cymbalta, and Anafranil

So that means that I could increase the trileptal. Or take 50 mg of Desipramine

I don't know what I would choose ...

Hi Maxime.

I feel as frustrated for you as I often feel for myself. I never catch a break. There's always something. Whatever can go wrong does go wrong. Damned drugs.

William Z. Potter, MD once suggested to me that I add only 10mg of desipramine to the MAOI I was taking at the time - clorgyline. Either he knew what he was doing or he was just covering his butt. Perhaps a small dose of desipramine would help.

Do you have any issues with using Remeron?

I have remained at 600mg of Trileptal for about a week. The cognitive and affective side effects are disappearing fast.

Don't forget about Keppra. It seems to have antidepressant and anticycling affects according to a few doctors I've corresponded with. I was going to add it to Trileptal if Trileptal proved inadequate.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=15582854&query_hl=1

I had a consultation with Kaufman. Funny experience. I had been interested in Keppra for awhile; his paper being one that I had taken into consideration. I had no idea who this guy was before I saw him. When I asked about Keppra, he asked me where I got that idea from. When he showed me a copy of his paper, I said, "Oooh. I read this." It must have been a nice stroke to his self-esteem.

I'll keep an eye out for things that I think might help you. Hang in there. Perhaps mifepristone (RU-486), an antiglucocorticoid that might reset the HPA axis and reduce cortisol would something worth for you to try. The NIMH is investigating it to treat bipolar depression. It has already proven itself in multiple studies to treat psychotic depression. It is a pain it the butt to get, but you only have to take it for one week. How cool is that? It is hypothesized that it resets the HPA and leaves you feeling better and perhaps more responsive to the medication you are taking. They will allow you to continue with Parnate. They only allow you 2 treatments per year right now. My guess is that I would need a maintenance treatment more often than that.

What tricks do you have up your sleeve?

- Scott
