Seroquel200Sleep;Trileptal300MornEve;Question

Posted by Corafree on May 4, 2005, at 9:37:50

I am unclear what the Trileptal is actually doing.

I realize Seroquel is an anti-psychotic used as a mood stabilizer and Trileptal is an anti-seizure used as a mood stabilizer.

But again, what is the Trileptal actually doing, as it works in conjunction with the Seroquel, that optimizes my mental health?

Can anyone help me understand please.

Best wishes always, Corafree

p.s. Have not yet changed my 'undesirable' P.

Trileptal works on the sodium channels in the brain.

Basically, a nerve impulse is transmitted by action potentials, which cause the sodium channels (& other channels) to open. Epilepsy occurs when action potentials fire, one after another after another. This is thought to be a problem in bipolar disorder, too.

Trileptal, then, prevents the action potentials from firing too rapidly & prevents the neurons from becoming overexcited.

Antipsychotics work in completely different ways. They work on the actual receptors themselves, blocking dopamine and serotonin receptors so that endogenous dopamine and serotonin cannot bind.

Trileptal has never helped me sleep, it did make me drowsy sometimes but sustained sleep never occurred ... Seroquel, however, is miraculous in that regard.
