I was just wondering how others did making the transition to nardil, considering the wash-out period...I'll be taking my last dose of paxil next wednesday. I am very depressed, and have ocd and social phobia...my pdoc will be keeping me on depakote ER 2000mg and lunesta 3mg. I also have a prescription for lorazepam 2mg prn.

I've never read a Thread on going off an SSRI to start an MAOI. Can I follow? Fondly, Phillipa

Can I ask what caused you to take the "big step". If it's because nothing works, then join the club. But, an MAOI? I just don't know. I know there are so many on the Board that swear by them. But we're led to believe they're so dangerous and how many docs Rx them? Fondly, Phillipa

I've been on all of the SSRIs with the exception of celexa (been on lexapro), anafranil for my ocd, most of the atypical antipsychotics, lithium, and lamictal. In middle school i developed social anxiety disorder and have had it to varying degrees ever since. Paxil has helped it in the past, but it seems that having come off of it so many times its lost its efficacy. I rarely leave the house and spend most of the day sleeping. I really don't enjoy doing anything anymore, let alone being around other people. In my mind I feel like I'm being judged by everyone and I have to do everything perfectly, and if I don't I have rituals that involve counting and symmetry that I perform in my head. I've read many times that nardil can be helpful in treating severe forms of depression and social phobia. My pdoc agreed to let me try it after i'd tried what seems like everything else, and he went over all the restrictions with me which i'm ok with. He's had success in treating people roughly my age with similar problems and had my father on it years ago, allowing him the ability to go to work again.

You sound just like me! Only difference is that I can't relax and sit still. I'm like a caged animal but don't have any energy. It's hard to find a doc that will try them. My new pdoc is in her 70's I would guess, and she mentioned in conversation that she still had l pt on an MAOI. The social phobia is the worst. I'm terrified of being enclosed with people. I need to escape. I really hope some others respond to your Thread. Fondly, Phillipa

My wash out period lasted 1 week. I didn't experienced any problems. 10 days should be enough to start MAOI without the risk of SS. Another thing is potencial addiction to paxil. You can experience unpleasant effects if you wont withdraw it slowly.

Mine was of 14 days. I stoped Effexor 75mg to
start Nardil. Rivotril helped me in those days
Im sure Nardil will help you more than your
previous medicines.Take Care!

Thanks for sharing your experiences..I am coming off of the paxil kind of abruptly, i figured the depakote would help me through withdrawals...plus i have lorazepam. My pdoc said lunesta could help the washout period..i dunno if he meant because it has antidepressant properties or a good nights sleep is vital to maintaining good mental health.

I was taking Celexa and Wellbutrin XL before I started Nardil. I think my washout was just over 14 days. It wasn't really that bad of an experience, because the Celexa and Wellbutrin weren't really helping anyway.
Also, I "practiced" the dietary restrictions during the washout period to make sure I could actually handle giving up cheese and such.
Good luck to you.
