Dexedrine is making me sleepy????

Posted by Maxime on April 2, 2005, at 17:55:47

Is this possible? For a stimulant to actually make me drowsy?

I felt like my body is attacking me. First I can't tolerate Parnate anymore. Now the Dexedrine is acting opposite to how it did a few weeks ago.

10 mg of Dexedrine would keep me going for just under 3 hours. I could feel its effect, it gave me a false sense of well-being but it worked. I have only been taking it if I have to go out. For the past 4 days it is making me sleepy! Is this even possible?

I really don't understand what my body is doing and why it seems to be metabolising meds differently.

For the record, I am eating.

In "Tuning the Brain", Dr. Jay Goldstein states that sedation due to stimulants is common in patients with neurosomatic disorders.

You are not alone.;)

Hello Maxi :-)

>10 mg of Dexedrine would keep me going for just under 3 hours.

Have you tried it at different doses, 5mg and 15mg? Stimulants sometimes seem to have quite different effects at different doses.

Thanks. :) Although it worked last week. I am really confused. But I am going to see if Dr. Jay Goldstein has any articles available online on the subject. Thanks for the lead.

Hey Ed :-)

I tried 5 mg, I was scared to take 15 mg because I do crash quite hard when it wears off. But I will try tomorrow and see what happens. I wish had some Adderall XR around to try and if the same thing happens. (whah! my beloved Adderall taken away from me).

Maxime, Your body is definitely going through some changes. I'm glad you're eating. I feel like we play "Sherlock Holmes" on this Board. Maybe we should all take the tests and see if we can pass and become MD's. Fondly, Phillipa

If I take it when I'm tired (at least 30% of time) I get sleepy.
When I am well rested I don't.

I also find that if I take it when I am glum, I get glummer.
If its a crap day and I am working hard and its time for
my 2.00pm dexedrine I will sometimes substitute a
Concerta or a coffee or even a chocolate muffin and a
bottle of Pellegrino.

It may sound nuts but it works.

Hi Maxi!

Perhaps you could take a small dose when you feel yourself starting to crash.

Maxime, You're making me think. Hard to do these days. But, I remember how relaxed xanax used to make me feel. About a year ago it "turned against me" and all it did was make me tired. No anxiety relief. I just figured my chemistry was changing. Could that be what's happening to you. Just a thought. Fondly, Phillipa

Yup, I have some in my drawer. It didn't work. It made me cranky and I wanted to cut.

Something is going on in my body and I don't know what it is. I also know that my complaints will be pushed aside and so there is no point in trying to convey what I am going through.

Hi

It is not at all unusual for 5-10mgs of Dex to make *any* person tired. however much higher doses 40-50+ at once are "another story"

The slang 'speed' *then* earns its rightfull name for this med at higher doses for Dex novices.

I find the 'tired' effects of low dose Rit to be threaputically beneficially,
-basically double the Dex mgs.

Maxi, I have a weird thought for you about this:

You say you're eating right now? I know that you've been -- uh -- a little -- er -- erratic in your eating recently, so are you now eating more regularly? If so, I'm wondering if it might be related to the amount of energy required for you to digest food? (Of course, I'm asking about this because I'm exhausted most of the day right now because of this very thing: takes me about two and a half hours to eat lunch, and then I have to nap for another hour to recover from it. My N says that should pass as I get more consistent in eating. She didn't say how long it would take, though... {sigh} )

Another thought is that you've really been through the wringer lately, and I can only imagine how much emotional energy that has drained away from you. I wonder if you are just really and truly wrung out right now? Maybe it's time to allow yourself a couple of days to rest and recharge?

I wish there was something we could do for you, Maxi. I feel for you, and hope you find your doctor has had his ears cleaned out enough that he can hear again soon.

(Remember: statistically, one quarter of all doctors graduate in the bottom 25% of their class. And you know what you call the guy who graduates last in his class in med school? "Doctor")

Racer, I think you are right. I am depleted. I have had the worse week possible.

I haven't posted about this, but I witnessed the aftermath of a suicide on Thursday. A man in his 30's jumped from the top floor of a shopping centre ... about six floors. I arrived about 5 minutes after it happened. I didn't mean to look. I didn't know what was going on. But I saw him. Face down. Motionless. And what looked like jello surrounding his head. If he wasn't dead physically, he was brain dead. People were throwing up around me. I wanted to do the same. I just walked away like a zombie. I can't get the image out of my head. Before I walked away a voice inside my head whispered "I wish it was me".

I am going back to plan I had last week. I am just going to get on a bus and go somewhere. Anywhere. Screw everything.

I'm wasted.

Dear Maxi, no wonder you're so wiped out! That's the kind of thing that leaves you with PTSD -- it's the sort of trauma, at the sort of time in your life when you're most vulnerable to it -- oh, Maxi. I'm so sorry.

I hope you miss that bus, Maxi. I think it would be better for you, right now, to rent a cat to curl up with, and grieve, and lick your wounds a little -- and give yourself time to recover.

Peace to you, Maxi. Breathe deep.
