How Does Percocet Affect You?

Posted by Phillipa on March 28, 2005, at 20:20:00

I think I really must be losing my mind, or selectively deciding not to remember things. The thing is I'm having some Ummm elective surgery done on Thursday. The doctor says I have to take percocet for the first 24 hours whether I have pain or not. Then I have a Rx for Tylenol with codeine. I've NEVER taken anything stronger than motrin. When I was nursing I saw too many pts become psychotic with pain meds, or totally confused and combative. So, I have this great fear of pain meds. I even had a colonoscopy and refused pain meds. He won't let me go home til I swallow the first pill. What is your experience with percocet? Some say it's very addictive cause it makes you feel good. I just know I'm afraid. Thanks Phillipa PS It's cosmetic, that's all I'll say.

I had to take Percocet when I had meningitis. I was in the worse physical pain ever. The first dosage made me throw up, so it you can try to take it with food. After that it was smooth sailing and it made me feel very good. It was very sedating for me. It is addictive, but I am sure your doctor will only supply you with a certain number of pills.

Good luck with the surgery. :)

Percocet for me was pretty smooth sailing. The only thing I would suggest against is driving, operating heavy machinery and performing neurosurgery until it wears off. Yes, I did get a it of a high from it.

I promise absolutely no neurosurgery. Boy, it would be great to feel good! The next thing you know is I will be posting on how do I get off percocet? He's only rx'd a small amt. Fondly, Phillipa

Don't mean to be flippant, but I almost wish we could swap doctors. My orthopedist seems to be an opiophobe and is resisting prescribing a pain-killer to me even for a trial basis with a small amount. Nothing else has worked vs. my muscular-skeletal pain.

Hi P!!

Percocet often causes nausea at first. It can be prevented/treated with an anti-emetic eg cyclizine.

I don't know if anything I say can or will help you out - but if you're in pain, you'll thank God for Percocet. It's the MEDIA that has overblown the whole pain med addiction thing - not saying it's not a precaution. But I doubt you'll become addicted for being on it 2 days. Besides, I'm taking an opiate pain med FOR depression. If that tells you anything. Plus it takes A LOT of Percocet to make you psychotic.

Good luck

I took Percodan after having my wisdom teeth out. I was so out of it that it took me like 3 days to realize my gums were stuffed with cotton, I thought it was swelling or something. Now 20 years later opiates have the exact opposite effect, increased energy and focus.

Take the pills for a couple of days, why be in pain if you don't have to be.

hi phillipa-- my experience tells me to be careful with opiate pain meds. i didn't get addicted at a moderate dose, 3x a day for about four months. getting off percocet was actually no problem. i was in the hospital when the dr decided to taper me off of most of my sedatives. i went off percocet without a problem; it was xanax, i think, that caused me the most trouble.

my trouble with opiates is that they made me very depressed at first. i started with vicodin and then got percocet, and within a week of starting, i went from stable mood to suicidally depressed and hysterical. other people may have the opposite reaction to pain meds, but if you have a mood disorder, approach percocet with caution. i spent my full, insurance-covered 10 days in the psych unit withhout much improvement.

regarding pain, though, percocet is very effective. the effective dose for me is 7.5/500, 7.5mg of oxycodone and 500 mg of acetamenophen. for me, it relieves just about any kind of pain. at prescribed doses, i didn't experience nausea, and the drowsiness wore off within a week.

good luck!

Took the Percocet l tab 5/325mg yesterday as the surgeon said I had to. I napped on and off. When I went to bed around lam, I took l percocet and 5mg of valium. Couldn't sleep. repeated above in 3 hours as i was due and had only taken half of the valium I normally do at bedtime. At 5:30 I finally fell asleep till 6:30. I hated the percocet. Not only did I not sleep, but my hands were shaking when I woke up. I took l tylenol with codeine so far today and took a nap. I don't think pain meds and I were meant to be. I think I was already becoming addicted to it as wierd as this sounds. Fondly,Phillipa
