remeron and the flu

Posted by hffcookie on February 18, 2005, at 21:25:49

Hello

I am posting for the first time because I have just begun taking Remeron 30mg/day along with the Effexor XR 300mg I was previously taking and 60mg Adderall for ADD (which, as a plus, has also helped me control the munchies from the Remeron). Anyway, I had been "trying out" the Remeron via my doctors samples for 12 days and had fantastic results. I felt lucid and that black fog of intense and unrelenting guilt and sorrow lifted for the first time in 2 years. Well, downside is that due to weekend mix-ups with my doc etc. I did not get more Remeron until 4 days later. I am now at day 3 of my "second round" on Remeron. I appreciate your patience, I know this is long, but to get to the point...during that four day window I got what seemed like a normal cold. I am severly congested and cold and decongestant otc meds are having no effect. I have read about the white blood cell count warning re Remeron and am wondering if I should be worried about this cold which seems to not be getting better...I usually bounce back from colds in a day or two...anyway...anyone with info or comments? Thank you again for reading this and once again if you post.

Best of health to everyone,
hc

I am not sure I have an answer, but just a thought--
I am not sure about Remeron, but I know some of the psychotropics out there specifically say you may develop flu-like symptoms initially--though they don't always specify what type of symptoms. Some people here, including me, have reported this happening...but at least when I experienced it, it wasn't cold-like but truly flu-like symptoms--achiness, slight temp, worn down....They usually go away with a little time.
I somehow doubt that Remeron would have that strong an effect on white blood cell count in such a short period of time...

This "second round" could have shocked your system. 4 days later is equal or beyond the half-life decay of Remeron.

Agranulocytosis occurs in Remeron in approximately 0.1% give or take... its a very small risk. Normally fever and sore throat and other more severe signs of infection are a possible indication... I'm not sure that a bad case of the sniffles (remember that sudafed is not a cure-all) is enough to worry about it. Still if anything gets worse you should talk to your doctor, and have a simple WBC draw to determine things. I had one just as a routine over-precaution after I was on remeron for oh I dunno a few weeks.

Hope you feel better.

Hi,

I have taken Remeron(15mg) for about 4 years stopping for 2 weeks twice. Speaking for myself it has been a very helpfull adjunct for sleep and anxiety. The previous poster mentioned case reports of infection and that is correct. Fortunately I have had none of those symptoms and the benefits far outweigh the possible risks for me. Good Luck. JN

thank you for the helpful words. (nm) » banga

I'm also taking l5mg of remeron. It's supposed to help with my sleep. I haven't taken it alone at night, but have been taking it the same time that I take sleep meds. I have been sleeping better, and when I wake in middle of night I am no longer taking xanax to go back to sleep. So, maybe it's helping. As for the cold, it's amazing what a difference a day makes! Hope you stay well. Fondly, Phillipa
