more effexor withdrawl advice needed please!

Posted by Dark on January 24, 2005, at 8:36:00

Hi,

need some thoughts on what my doc has advised me to do.

Been taking effexor for just over a year and in last couple of months went down to 37.5mg a day. After advice from my doc i have started to taper off by missing a day of taking it after 7days, then 6, 5 etc until i was taking one every other day. Now im taking one every 2days, then 3days, then 4 and so on untill i stop completely. Now obviously after 2 days without taking the withdrawl effects started to kick in so im feeling pretty worried.

Has anyone else tapered off this way or is there a better way to do it?

any thoughts or suggestions appreciated!

cheers,

I think that your doc's advise was reasonable. Some people report good results from taking Prozac at the same time you are weaing off of Effexor. Then, ffter the Effexor is stopped completely, keep taking the Prozac for another week or so.

Missing days is probably going to be of no value. Effexor's halflife is so short that you will suffer withdrawl during those days.

Once you are down to 37.5mg I would substitute 10mg dosages of Prozac to easy the withdrawl pains. Prozac has an extremely long halflife & thus very little withdrawl syndrome.

If there is an easy way, you're doing it :-)

thanks for the replys guys,
im at the missing 2 days stage so far and havnt got further yet.
Found that after 2 days sleeping is difficult finding my self always waking in to a half asleep state and feeling really uncomfortable and not being able to sleep properly. Also nasty waves of feeling sick & really irratiable!
gonna try and go 3 days without next.
seems like this is a common way of tapering off so guess just gotta grim and bare it.
no prozac to help tho, maybe i should ask my doc...
