how do i taper off effexor-xr

Posted by Aaron Uyanik on January 22, 2005, at 0:15:14

Hi guys

Let me start by introducing myself, my names Aaron and it’s the first time I’ve actually posted here, although i have been reading some of the comments you guys have wrote. I tend to look for some good comments on this effexor-xr medication, however I find that the majority here actually despise this drug. I am a little concerned with the negativity surrounding this anti-depressant because my GP has also put me on this drug. I have been taking it, 75mg in the morning for about a month now and found it to be working for me with the usual side effects, the damn hot flushes (lol) a little nausea and the sex drive.

Concerning the sex drive I can get it up and it stays up for as long as I want it too, however I can’t seem to cum or have an orgasm. In saying that though when I masturbate with a little concentration I get off pretty well (I wonder why this is though).

I'm taking this medication for mild depression after breaking up with my mistress of one year and yes I am married (lol). I just couldn’t cope with it and wasn’t able to do anything without going crazy. Anyway my major concern is after reading some of the side effects that you guys went through during the withdrawal process I am really concerned by all this. Is there anyone out there who hasn’t been affected by the side effects like some on this forum, also is there anyone out there that can help me taper down from 75mgs when the time comes and if so could you please post it for me. Thank you all for taking the time in reading this.

God bless you all.

thats my point.. stop now if you can.. Ask to be swithced to a different anti depressant. there are lots out there. No one is invalidating your need for medication, but effexor is a scary drug when you want to stop. also, don't let your doctor dissmiss your feelings about effexor. mine did and ended up increasing my dosage. I was on it two weeks when i FINALLY had the balls to say say "no, this isn't what I wanted." prozac worked well for me a few years ago, also lots of people have had success with welbrutrin. make an appointment now and save yourself a horrible time in the future. Effexor did work well for my anxiety and depression, it was everything that came along with it that I couldn't handle. your treasing on thin ice. god bless -becci

thet make a 37.5 mg pill for this.. if you have plenty of the 75 and want to taper down, I would sugest emptying out half of the 75's for a week. then empty out 3/4 of the 75's for a week. effexor has a short half life and will leave your system shortly after 24 hours, so be prepared with each smaller dosage for some withdrawl effects. they are just a tease to what is coming when you fianlly do stop taking it. when you do decided to stop taking it, remember you are not alone when going through withdrawls. these are actual chemical dependancy withdrawls simallar to what herion and coke and acholics go through. we've all made it through and you can too. keep your eye on the prize!! no more feeling ucky!

Thank you becci for your help, i have some serious thinking to do i guess. I just feel so good with this drug and it helps me a little with the sex part, knowing that other ssri medication impeeds the libido.

thanks again.

wow, i guess everybody's different. my sexlife is so unimportant to me when i'm on effexor, can't get it up either. but prozac increased my libido back when it used to work for me. welbutrin is a bit of an aphrodisic for me too, i take 300xr wb now and effexor just shrunk me right on up. i can't wait to get off the effexor, but i wonder what i will substitute with?

I think that those who have had better experiences aren't posting as much as those who haven't. I was on Effexor XR for nearly 5 years. At one point I got up to 225 mg. It has helped my depression more than any other medication to date. It was not a complete response and it didn't give me motivation so I have been experimenting with other thnings lately. However, I'm probably going to go back on Effexor and try augmenting it with other medications and supplements.

I didn't have a horrible withdrawal from the Effexor either. I decreased it VERY slowly. When I finally went off of the last quarter of a pill (about 10 mg.) I started to have some problems. I had two very uncomfortable days until I started taking Cymbalta. Then all of the side effects went away. It could have been hellis had I not had the Cymbalta to take. You really need to substitute another serotonergic agent (at least at the end) when you're going off of this medication. It doesn't have to be for a long period of time. Sometimes one 10 mg. of Prozac is all that is needed. Had I taken the Cymbalta a couple of days earlier, I would have had minimal problems with the whole withdrawal. Maybe I was lucky. I don't know, but others have gone off of Effexor with very little problem also. All of them seem to have taken something else with serotonergic activity to help the process along though. (BTW, Prozac is supposed to be great for this because of it's long half-life.)

If I were you and I were having a great response to the medication without any horrible side effects, I would stay on it. I would, however, educate myself on how to go off of it when the time comes. If you're still uncomfortable staying on it (and I wouldn't blame you after reading all of the horrible posts) then please make sure you do the withdrawal in the right way.

Take care,
Kara

KaraS thank you so much for your imput, you have most certainly been a great help. I needed to hear someone say something like this because i really do like this medication at the moment. however i will have to do alot of research before going of this medication in order for me to taper down in a causious manner. I would love to hear from you more at a later date so that you can help me in the future when i'm tapering down. You have lifted my mood a lot with your words of encouragement. Please just keep in touch thats all i ask i am a little concerned with the withdrawal systems. Again thank you and god bless everyone for helping me on this post.

if effexor is working for you without many side effects i would recommend you continue taking it, with the awareness it is not as benign as they would have you think.
i considered stopping because i was having too many unwanted side effects. only when i tried to stop did i realize the withdrawl, which brought me here. drugs not working for me is the story of my life- had effexor not been so difficult for me to tolerate(i tried taking it for 8mos.) i think the trade off of side effects would've been worth it. there is no withdrawl if you take it, i have no idea of longterm though...it did keep me from killing myself.
i love welbutrin! i've been taking it for 6 yrs. now. no side effects once you get used to it! kind of like a cup of coffee that lasts all day. it works on dopamine, reward center, i think it's a good augmentation drug for any ssri, tricyc, or nari, although i am NOT a dr. if you are impotent from the drugs you are taking, WB will not bring your sex life back (i hear of dr.s trying to cure that side effect with WB) but if you have no problems in that area it will increase your libido (my libido). go figure, an AD with stimulant properties, of course you'll dance better in the bed!

Hi Aaron, I am tapering off now and have been journaling my experience on a thread, Re: Renee Tapering Off Effexor, you might want to check it out. If Effexor is working for you, then great, Im not for or against it. I used it and am ready to get off now. So, thought I'd share my withdraw experience with everyone. Renee

Renee thank you for replying to my post. As i have stated in my earlier post i am a little scared about the withdrawal effects when the time comes. However i do feel much better then i did before taking effexor-xr. I take 75mgs in the morning which i feel is enough for me to get by on. I would much appreciate anyone here inlcuding yourself in helping me taper off this med when the times write. I will look back at your earlier thread and read what you have wrote on how you are tappering down. Again thank you for your reply and god bless.

P.S Renee keep in touch!
